Oktoberfest
Welcome to the greatest party on Earth! Finally! D-Day had come! D for Deutschland, Drinking and Day of seeing Leah! We jumped on the train and arrived into Munich almost the same time as Leah, who had been visiting castles for the day. After a reunion that resembled a scene from one of those cheesy American movies, we headed to the hostel, dumped our stuff and headed straight away into Theresienpark, the site of Oktoberfest.
We had a quick walk around before choosing a tent where we managed to scrape in one stein before they stopped serving. We also met several locals who loved us. They took us under their wing and showed us several secret places and gave fashion advice to Clay and Leah on ‘proper’ (ie. Not touristy) t-shirts and hats to wear. Eventually we said good night and after a log flume ride, we headed back to the hostel.
As seasoned veterans of Oktoberfest, we knew we needed to be up early in order to secure a table so getting up at 6am to try and get to the tents for as close to 7am as possible doesn’t sound quite as insane as it should. It proved worthwhile as we made it into
Hofbrauhaus
One of the tents - not one we went into this trip the Augustinerbrau tent and secured a table before Debbie, Damo, Katrina and her friends, and later on Rachelle and her crew joined us. The first beer came at 9am, and suffice to say the rest of the day passed pretty quickly.
I looked at my photos for inspiration on what we did over the course of the next several hours, but it looks like we basically drank beer, talked to each other and all the tables around us, drank beer, danced on tables, drank beer and had an awesome time. I did have my obligatory pork knuckle which lived up to its usual standard, though I will leave a fuller description until later on....
At about 4pm, Clay and Hannah had disappeared off and the tent felt like a sauna so Leah and I headed out for an ice cream and sat on the grass. We were feeling pretty exhausted so we decided to head back to the hostel for a nana nap before coming back in later in the evening. We had barely got into our beds when Hannah came in, completely unaware that we were in there. Leah simply said ‘Hello’. I never have seen such
Quiet Night
Getting acquainted with the locals a reaction to the word. Hannah was so freaked out that she jumped in the air and had an asthma attack right there, meanwhile laughing hysterically – which was Leah’s reaction as well. It was mine as well until Hannah started wheezing and crumpled to the concrete ground. I flew down and put her in the recovery position and she started breathing again – and laughing. I put her into bed, and on the third time she stayed there – without falling out. We woke up at 10pm – much later than planned, and figured it was too late to go back in and went back to sleep.
We all woke up feeling fairly good the next day and Hannah and Clay went to the city centre to do some shopping, while Leah and I headed straight back into the festival. We joined Kristin and her friends at Lowenbrau and started off much slower than the previous day. One of the entire highlights of the entire trip happened next. After extolling the many virtues of the pork knuckle, I convinced Leah (a former vegetarian), to share one with me. Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to capture her facial expression
Day 1 #1
The crowds as she tried for the first time, but needless to say she was in food heaven. It was so good that it was “better than sex”. High praise indeed.
As the afternoon wore on, Hannah and Clay joined us, as well as Rachelle and her friends, and we carried on our antics while introducing ourselves to locals and foreigners alike at the tables all around us. Eventually we left and Leah, Rachelle and I went on a couple of rides and had some dinner before we drunkenly stumbled back to the hostel to pick up our bags before heading to the train station for our midnight night train Budapest.
I was absolutely exhausted but we made it there and found our cabin. Luckily there was only another Asian couple in Leah and my cabin, but unluckily for Rachelle she was stuck in a cabin with 5 guys for the night while very drunk. She’ll be fine.... Right?.....
