Lake Morraine
Lake Louise was nice, Lake Morraine was stunning... Hi guys,
What a weekend. Got back from Red Deer friday arvo and packed up for a weekend in the Rocky Mountains! My travelling companions for the weekend included Matt (the messy kiwi), Grant (the punctuallty-challenged South African) and the gals Amanda & Lyn (from remote east coast Antiganesh, akin to being from Longford...)
We set off in the car towards Banff, aboot 1.5hrs from Calgary enjoying equally the beautiful mountain scenery and fine selection of "crap-classics" from Grants cd collection which included greats from Hootie & Bon Jovi. We stayed at a hostel in Banff Town, and got off to a flyer when "Skwinty" the grumpy Admin boy refused to join us in an enthusiastic round of Ducky Fuzz. Skwint let us off with a severe noise reprimand and no doubt returned to watching 37 consequtive episodes of star track...
Grant clearly hadn't heard aboot my previous encounter with the black dog Balentines whisky, because he had dutifully packed 1.5litres of the stuff in his bag. For those not in the loop, after finishing my teaching interneship I may have enjoyed a few quiet Balentines which led to me being carried to bed by F & S

Amanda & Lyn paddling in the middle of Lake Louise Stucas with a pretty toilet roll holder on my head. This time the bout ended with a 2-1 points decision in my favour, and we headed out to a local nightspot called Aurora's for a few more bevies and a groove.
The next morning we were greeted with sunshine a repetitve thumping to the back of the head (& if I catch the squirrel that crapped in my mouth he is dead!). After a feed of grease at the local diner we headed up into the mountains. First stop was Lake Louise, a stunning turquoise coloured lake nestled at the foot of glacier filled mountains. We hired a couple of canoes and took off for the middle of the lake, which is around 270ft deep towards the centre. Because the lake is a lazy 0 deg at this time of year we fought the urge for a dip, and just cruised about for an hour.
Our next stop was the far more spectacular Lake Morraine, some 15 kms from Lake Louise. No where near as many tourists here, and far less commercialised. After a trek around the paths we stopped for a few post card perfect photos, and

Amanda & Lyn paddling in the middle of Lake Louise with Matt & Grant in the background a good laugh at Amanda's slightly irationale fear of those small & cute furry things called chipmunks that frequent the area. Fantastic value, this little guy was stalking her cause everytime we turned around he was there, just wanting to say hello. We walked into town that evening to Wild Bill's western Saloon for a pint and a feed of pork ribs, which were awesome.
Sunday morning we checked out and headed to Johnsons canyon. It is a gorge winding past several waterfalls along the canyon rock face. Took about an hour to reach the main falls, which were worth the walk! After a quick game of frisbee in the carpark we headed back into Banff town to visit the hotsprings and have a look at the Banff Springs hotel, which is a monster of a building! Lots of photos to come, Grant has a you-beaut new fangled camera and took about 150 photos, which I will post later on down the track, keep an eye out in the gallery.
Birthday was good, thanks Frank & Sue for the card and pressie, will put it to good use. Did a school visit in the morning, then cricket training
and straight to FATS for a beer. Grant, Mukul & Co shouted a few rounds and several shots of god only knows what we staggered home. Suffice to say yesterday was something of a right-off, all good fun.
Catcha.
