Shanghai
The train arrived on time at 9.30am so we reached the hotel by about 10.30am. A quick shower and lunch, we then had a walk along Nanjing Road, in the pouring rain, to Shanghai Museum! Spent a couple of hours wandering around looking at old Chinese things ( sorry Nick...I still can’t get into museums!) - apart from some jade items that were made between 2200BC – 3200BC that were slightly impressive! Anyway, back out in the rain and took the little train back along the Nanjing Road as it was now thunder and lightening and rain!
Didn’t venture out from the hotel again until early evening – still raining but not quite so heavy – and walked down to the riverfront! Wow! Amazing skyline, all the skyscrapers were lit up as well as the boats on the river and the bridges, the old buildings and even the walls and pavements had light displays! Had a wander along the riverfront and Nanjing Road, then bed!
The next day we decided to go with Millie, our guide, who had offered to take anyone who wanted to go, to the Yu gardens and the old part of Shanghai. The old buildings were built in traditional Chinese style and the gardens which are 500 years old were really pretty. Got caught again in a huge downpour but afterwards the sky cleared and we were treated to an afternoon of sunshine! We caught the City Tour Bus to East Shanghai to explore the other side of the river bank and to look at the Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao Tower and had a wander on their elevated walkway. Caught the City Tour Bus for a circuit of the town as we wanted to go up the World Financial Centre as it was getting dark!
Bumped into a few from our group and we all ascended the tallest observatory in the world, the 3rd highest building in the world, the others being the TV station in Canada and one in Dubai. Caught the lift to the 97th floor, in a matter of minutes, and Wow!! All the buildings that we had been looking up at and admiring we were now looking down at!! Amazing! Even the Pearl Tower and Jin Mao Tower appeared small and the cars like dinky toys! Went up the escalator to the 100th floor, the very top of the building, which has a glass floor!! Spent a very pleasant couple of hours sat up there watching the sun set and Shanghai gradually lighting up once again! Totally spectacular and one of the things I will definitely always remember!
Had a traditional Chinese meal in the World Financial Centre, of steamed chicken dumplings and noodles before having a night trip around the City on the tour bus!
