After 13 hours in the air from Singapore, back where we belong, with the other cattle, we touch down in Ol" London town. Actually, if you take away the food, service and comfort, there's not a lot of difference between economy and business class.
There were a couple of glistening eyes to be seen during our first catch up with the kids. I don't think that we moved off the couch for the first few hours, just talked. They are both working in a pub called The Pilgrim which is about 100 metres from Taryn's flat in a suburb called Kennington. It is a quaint, but vibrant, little place and, on our first afternoon, we dragged our jet lagged bodies up for what we thought was a quiet aperitif. Within 30 minutes we were on first name basis with all the staff and half the customers. Quite a few beers, and 2 rounds of Jaegar bombs later, we were spat out the door and sent on our merry way, ready to take on any young rioter who may dare get in our way.
The Pilgrim is located about 100 metres from the famous London cricket ground know as The Oval and our visit just happens to coincide with the 4th test between England and India. The Poms are petty much all into cricket at the moment having, for the first time in quite awhile, a respectable team. The match therefore is a sellout and the little pub is busting at the seems after the days play. It is not unusual to see guys walking around dressed up as their favourite cartoon characters having a pint. What that has to do with cricket I'm not sure, but they all seem to be having fun. Best quote of the trip so far: A bloke standing at the urinal in the men's, dressed in a full crocodile suit, when another bloke walks in and says "Mate, that's the longest fly I've ever seen!"
Our last day in England and we cover most of London by foot. After dinner we finnish up back at the Pilgrim, listening to a couple of expat Kiwis named Angus & Luke who go by the the name of the Buffalo Twins play to the last remnants of the Test Match crowd. To listen to their rendition of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Cars" is worth the time there alone, notwithstanding the rest of the evening having fun with the crowd. A request is made for "Brown Eyed Girl" and we finish the night with Trace dancing with Davis & me with Taryn. Memories like this are priceless.
