Sunday 29th May. Today was the best day so far. It started with a glassblowing demonstration, which I thought would be hellishly boring but no, I was wrong. The room was full because Frank the tour director had just finished his little daily talk and so were a captive audience. Nobody spoke or left the room. This guy was funny, entertaining & so very clever. My only real complaint for the day was that we didn’t get to his Gallery because we went for a bike tour. We were clever though and bought a few things after he had finished his talk a little forethought on Johnny’s part.
The loch system along the rivers is amazing. The first one had us all enthralled but now they are passé. John of course has many photos. The Captain of the ship is very skilled as it is a very long narrow-ish ship that he has to manouvre through some very tight areas.
We stopped in a little Medieval town called Miltenburg. Amazing stories of the old buildings and the inscriptions and what they mean and the fact that they were built from a stone base but with wood, straw and mud and they are still there 600 years later in some cases.
We travelled on to Wertheim where John and I hopped on the bikes and did a tour through the countryside. It was a beautiful day and there were flat parts and not so flat parts. As I was in 1st gear struggling up the hill on the way back I thought it was crap that my back packed it in when John & I were so committed to our fitness for this trip, earlier in the year. We would have “Lance Armstronged” home instead if coming in 4th and 5th. (Next time Gadget, Next time). The bikes took a bit of getting used to, deadly brakes and very direct steering but now we are “pro’s”. Unfortunately we just missed getting to the glass gallery to buy some stuff to ship home. I so wanted a big blue glass ball. I will have to email the fellow.
Last night we had a riotous dinner with Theo, Jan, Nancy & Lou and then into the bar for another of Nancy’s “drinks”. This time a cocktail – “cocoloco”. It was yummy it had pineapple juice, Malibu, cranberry juice and yum yum. We were caught though in the lounge as the zither player started. Great instrument that one… A cross between a sitar and ukulele. Fritz had been learning for some sirty years… One bright note in the performance was Eidelweiss. We sang and very loudly. Again time for bed after a little too much alcohol. Slept well again as you do when you have been drinking.
