Monday Night:
The FAO called to say my bathroom was apparently leaking into the apt below. Of course I have no problem with getting this fixed asap. I wouldn't want someone's bathroom leaking into mine! I figured since this will be a few hours of cleaning out a pipe, Tuesday morning would be the perfect time for the workers to come. The FAO said they'd arrive around 830 or 9am, which means I still get to sleep in and read the newspaper in peace.
Tuesday:
At 805 am a few workers showed up with a jackhammer and by 830 am they had reduced my floor to dust. I hadn't even used the toilet yet and was barely out of my PJs. My toilet is now in the middle of my living room. Part of it is in my kitchen sink. I will have no shower or toilet for 3 days. My kitchen is covered in dust, and I'm sure the rest of my apt is too.
I called a friend and asked to use his bathroom. He said he'll even clean it for me. So does another friend. I'm so glad I could inspire them in my
time of need.
Wednesday:
I had classes all day and was able to miss most of the noise and chaos. My toilet is still in my living room, but now there is a new, tiled floor drying in my bathroom. The workers have left the window wide open (welcoming mosquitos) but closed the door between my bathroom and kitchen. They've place cardboard and the head of a mallet on the floor to cover the gap so the mosquitos can't explore the rest of my apartment. I have buckets in my kitchen. I am so distracted by all the chaos I can't relax, rest, or get anything done.
Thursday:
I am told I can use my bathroom tonight! My toilet is back in, the floor looks nice, and they've cleaned up much of the mess. There's still dust everywhere and I sense that they've been using my apt sofa while I've been out.
Thursday Night:
After teaching for twelve hours I am so excited to come home and take a shower. In my own apartment. In my new bathroom. And get all the chalk and dust off of me. But, wait, for some reason, there's no
water! So, again, no shower, no toilet. Again, I go to a friend's. I'm starting to think I should start leaving my toiletries up in his bathroom.
Friday:
The water is back on! It turns out my downstairs neighbor accidently turned it off for everyone; the valve must be in their apartment. And since they were out, we couldn't get in. Now the water is back on.
Friday Night:
Time for my first shower in my own, new bathroom! Just as I got shampoo in my hair, the power went out. My apartment is pitch black. Looking out my window, I realize all the buildings and streetlights are black.
I think I need a vacation.

Now that is a mess!
Hopefully they will repair it in the 3 days and not make it 3 weeks. Good luck.
