After a good sleep, a wonderful shower, and an extensive hotel breakfast (about NZ$15) we were ready to meet Rae.
It was great to catch up with her and pass on greetings from her ex-colleagues back in NZ. Jill’s parcel made it safely and our bags are a tiny bit lighter.
With Rae, we headed to Hong Kong Island by MTR and got off at Admiralty. From here we caught a double-decker bus to Stanley on the other side of the island. The road is hilly, winding, but the views are spectacular. Incredible apartment buildings dot the hillsides for the best views.
Today was a public holiday so everyone in Hong Kong decided to visit Stanley. We jostled around the market and found a wonderful little jewellery shop. For security Marilyn left her rings in NZ so needed some replacements. So, after nearly 32 years of marriage it was time for an engagement ring. A nice little number with two bands of “diamonds” interspersed with “rubies” and all elasticated to allow for travel swelling! It is a very nice piece of “bling” and will do until we get to where the real stuff is!!! . As for clothes we could have filled several suitcases but the will to resist is great at this stage.
It was time for lunch on the waterfront promenade and a “talk-fest”. It was an opportunity to watch the locals enjoying their holiday. Large numbers of Europeans, families, and people taking their dogs for a special outing. To see dogs sitting at the table enjoying their favourite dish is something we are not used to. Most families seem to seem to have either one precious child or a pet dog instead. The promenade of pet fashions passing by was unbelievable.
We visited Murray House, a large stone colonial building that had been de-constructed stone by stone and shifted from the sight of the new Bank of China and re-built at Stanley.
It was time to head back to Central and a quick look around that part of the city in preparation for tomorrow. We were back on the train and said our farewells to Rae with plans to meet up again in September when we return on our way back to NZ.
The finale of the day was the spectacular Sound and Light Show at 8pm. By now we were ready for bed.
Tomorrow is our last day in Hong Kong with a late night departure for Istanbul with a transit stopover in Zurich.
