mia au pair from sweeden and i eating bbq'd spring onions ! Nightclubbing Barcelona- left home at 8 got home at 8 what can I say awesome night. Had drinks at a friends house and 10 other “foreigners” and au pairs came so it was great to meet so many awesome people my age living in Barcelona. Drank my first Sangria- which was so cheap it cost me 1.5 euros so about $3 in nz. Couldn’t believe it this is for a 1.5L bottle of 7% alcohol!
We then headed to port Olympics which is where there are huge new nightclubs- we only made it into one- beacause after a certain time you have to pay a door charge of at least 20 euros just to get in!!! that’s 40nz dollars- no thankyou! The club we went to was 3 stories high and called Catwalk- was awesome music but the people were not so good! The people were very full on and you were constantly having to run away from them! Apart from that really good night- lots of dancing and having fun ,cant wait for next Saturday. We got home at 8am I said good morning to my family and then went to bed til 2pm in the afternoon! Woke up to

this is how they have to be eaten a beautiful sunny day- which it hasn’t been like the whole time I have been here and went to some family friends for a Spanish ‘BBQ’ there were 5 other families there and another au pair. First course- we had spring onions cooked on a fire- you then take off the top layer of the skin and dip it in a sort of aioli sauce- but has capsican also- was absolutely amazing! You ate with a bib made out of a paper towel and with your fingers very messy but so good! Ate so much- I should have known better- the Spanish always have at least 2 courses and so much food! Next came Spanish sausages and a special garlic sauce – really good as well- am going to need to get a lot of recipes before I leave. One thing I have noticed about the Spanish is that they don’t eat a lot of pre packaged or processed food- they make it all- and the majority of their food is from the markets or specialty shops!
After I thought I couldn’t eat anymore out came dessert- these were two GINORMOUS pasteries filled with crème and custard – and

the dads preparing the Spanish don’t like to waste anything so those were quickly eaten up- always room for dessert is what they told me ☺ after that my dad here got out his guitar and the other familes and dads started to sing along – soon we were all having a singalong- drinking cava (similar to champagne but it’s the most famous product from our region) and looking out at the vineyards. Was an amazing atmosphere- and the best day I have had in Barcelona so far!
Then to carry on with the very Spanish theme of the day I decided to go home and have a siesta. All in all wonderful day- so happy with everything here and so glad to have the family here that I have.
Sunday: today was another family day- my family invite me to everything that they do but I can choose if I want to go or not, but I am loving these days the best. Today we went to see my host mums parents in a town 40km out of Barcelona. It was high in the hills and soooo cold- compared to Barcelona! The town was so old and beautiful – sorry I

the one on the left is my dad here in Barcelona didn’t take my camera! I have learnt my lesson though. The whole family was there and I met all the cousins and aunts and uncles, had a really lovely time- and everybody put up with my really bad Spanish! As per usual in Spain we had lots and lots of food- I ate more than I did on Christmas day- cause I have to try everything haha we had almond soup as an entrée- sounds horrible and looked it as well but was amazing I will definitely get that recipe before I leave. Then we had meat and veges and the usual. Dessert crema de catalonia- which is a type of custard and strawberries and amazing pastries. If I keep eating like this I will no longer fit my clothes! ☺
We then went for a walk in the countryside, it was so historic and we saw an old castle that had only its turret and its wall left but had then been converted into a farm house- there are castles and historic monuments everywhere you go here! It has so much history! We then saw a igloo shaped thing in the middle of the countryside- I was then told

all of us enjoying the food and sunshine that because the region is so cold, before they had refrigeradors they used to get all the ice in the winter and store it in this and then sell it to other towns nearby to keep their foods fresh. Was very interesting- you don’t think about life before fridges and tvs etc!
The rest of the week was filled with shopping and trips into Barcelona , start language school next week cant wait!!!
Elina (finnish au pair) tries to go to the museo di Picasso but it was closed! That’s after taking half an hour to get there and asking at least 5 people for directions- oh well what good Spanish practice. We then decided on the second best option the chocolate museum (the option I was in favor of the whole time!) Was really cool our tickets to enter the museum were made of chocolate and inside were hundreds of amazing sculptures all made out of chocolate- took so many photos.
Once we had finished at chocolate museum we went to the park- which I had never been to before is Barcelonas version of NY central park. But this is my favourite place so far!! It
was beautiful and a nice place to escape the hustle and bustle of Barcelona. Definitely a perfect spot for picnics!
Still loving my family here – feel so at home and now have gotten used to the girls and what works for each so is so easy with them now- compared to first week haha
Tomorrow heading to mountains very close to Pyrenees and going Nordic Skiing- will keep you updated.
Xxx Much love from the amazing city of Barcelona!
