During our journey on the morning ferry to Ko Phi Phi, we took in the breathtaking views of the surrounding limestone karsts jutting out of the sea. On arrival we realised we wouldn’t be able to get cheap accommodation with air-conditioning, and it was so hot that wasn’t an option, so we pushed the boat out and were taken aback when we saw the location of our chosen resort over looking long beach with un-obscured sea views.

Long beach was a short boat ride from the main town which meant it was very quiet and our private bungalow at Phi Phi Hill was above one of the best resorts on the island for a fraction of the cost. After settling in we had a lovely fresh fish meal before taking a 30 minute hike into the town where we wandered around the shops and Joanne found a Smurfs T-Shirt that reminded her of our escapades in New Zealand. After a few drinks we got a long boat back to Phi Phi hill – It was double the cost of the day boat but worth it to escape the long walk back in the dark.

We spent the morning at secluded beach on east coast of the island with only a couple of other people in sight. In the afternoon we had two wonderful dives around Phi Phi Lei and some smaller islands.

During our first dive we swam through a tunnel & saw a Leopard Shark. In-between our dives we had lunch and went snorkelling at Maya beach (from the film ‘the beach’) but we didn’t go to shore as it was packed with people and there was a landing fee. On our second dive we finally saw a Turtle and as the sun began to set the anemones began to close up and turned an electric blue. We thought it was a wonderful dive, but when we got back to the surface we were surprised by how shocked the dive master had also been with the amazing colours. She had never dived so close to sunset before and said it completely changed everything. We watched the sunset into the sea from the long boat on our way back – such a wonderful day.

We chilled out for a few hours before going rock climbing. We’d both done a little indoor climbing before, so we knew the basic knots and how to belay, but it was a whole different experience on a real rock wall. Our guide hooked up the ropes for us on several walls about 40-50ft high, and we tried the climbs one at a time, starting straight up and moving onto some pretty tough overhangs.

After a hard afternoon climbing we had a walk around town an enjoyed our last evening on the island.
