New Zealand is full of things to do if you want to be mad. Things a bit like bungee jumping and Jet Boat riding. Mum would not let me do a bungee jump ( I was too small and too young). When we got to Taupo she said that one of the best things that we could do would be to go on a jet boat.
A jet boat is a speed boat that is able to go in shallow water because the engine does not dangle down off the back of the boat but is mostly inside and sucks the water into the boat and pushes it out really hard. This makes the boat glide along the top of the water and it can do circle turns and go very very fast.
We decided to go to the Hukka Falls Jet because mum had been on this a long time ago. The boat has seats for 12 people and the driver. It takes off at what feel like 100 miles an hour and the driver steers the boat along the side of the river. It feels like you are going to crash but then the driver quickly turns.
Your tummy flips a lot. After a few minutes the driver turned the boat in a full circle while going really fast. We all got very wet but it was really good fun.
After playing around for a bit we went further up the river to where there is a huge waterfall called the Hukka Falls. this waterfall controls all the water in Lake Taupo from the river we were on. There are big gates that they open 5 times a day to let even more water in. The waterfall grows even bigger when they do this. We played around in the spray of the waterfall in the boat doing big circle turns. It was really good fun.
After the jet boat ride we decided to try prawn fishing at the farm next door. The Hukka Prawn Farm breads Malaysian freshwater prawns which are really big. We got a tour of the prawn farm and got shown how the babies grow from smaller than a grain of rice to bigger than your hand in about a year. The prawn farm shows you how to catch the prawns and then sends you out to the big fishing ponds to
see if you can catch any yourself.
The rods that they give you are big bamboo rods and they give you tiny bits of cut up meat to put on the hooks. Then all you have to do is sit there and relax until a prawn comes and takes a big bite. Its not like normal fishing and you have to wait for 3 minutes after the prawn has bitten the hook before you pull him in otherwise her might get away. It was really relaxing and although we had lots of bites we caught NO prawns. Lots of other people did. I was very annoyed. It was good fun and I would like to go fishing when I get home.
