Eventful day today! Woke up early because the man that runs the hotel organised a trip to Bishnoi village for us- a local community of indigenous Indians. We visited a clay-pot factory where I made a splendid wonky bowl. We then went on to a typical home where everyone has opium for breakfast. Me and Laura were offered some but politely declined. We looked around another home where a man makes carpets and rugs from scratch- he was even using the old-school looms! This finished just after lunch where we got the bus to Jaisalmer...what a bus that was! First of all they have ordinary seats, then above them little cabins where people sleep. Each cabin fits 2 people but in true India style a whole family was shoved in there. Then there's the 1 foot wide aisle where people are getting on and off so all in all a 50 person bus squeezed 100 people on. I wouldn't mind but you have to take into account the obligatory staring. Try sitting there with a girl pushed on your leg who's eyeballing you for an hour and a half- very uncomfortable!
I couldn't talk about the bus without mentioning a
horn- each time they overtake they beep...not just any beep. A tuneful trumpet fanfare- no nap for us.
I nearly had my head squashed on that bus today. I opened the sliding window to make sure that our luggage wasn't being thrown off/ robbed and the man infront tried to close the window his side whilst my head was sticking out! I made a little whimpering noise but he didn't flinch! We got to Jaisalmer about 6pm and found a hostel for 200 rupees (about 3 pound, so 1.50 each). It was a total dump even by our standards. I didn't particularly enjoy when we were checking-in, the man made a joke about selling me so that my mum and boyfriend would come over and pay money for me. I slept with one eye open all night. Don't want to have to send the Gorton mafia down and have a 'I'll find you and I'll kill you' scenario!
In typical 'Jen&Moz' style we came to Jaisalmer and didn't realise we were here for the desert festival. An annual event where we can go into the desert, do a camel safari, watch camel racing and see who wins the
award for the longest moustache! The usual really... We're going tomorrow for sunset so will put pics up in a few days.
Woke up at 8am this morning to move to the hostel over the road. I wasn't surprised when Laura was looking in my hair (we're paranoid as hell that we'll catch nits!!) and spotted 3 grey hairs. I'm sure they weren't there 2 weeks ago...
I must also say that me and Laura will look the same in every photo because we are wearing the same clothes each day. I didn't think about having to wear long sleeves/ long leggings each day so we're handwashing. Cannot wait to get to Goa and air these illuminous legs!
