South America bound and headed for the crazy land of Colombia.
"When you're in Colombia don't get kidnapped. To pay the ransom your mother and I might have to sell the house." These were the encouraging words of my dad a few nights ago. Why the apprehension? Because tomorrow I fly to Colombia. I will be in the country for a little over twelve days. Everyone assumes Colombia is such a dangerous place that they kidnap you as soon as you hit the street and shove cocaine up your nose. I however don't think this is the case. I am sure that it is a bit dangerous destination, perhaps more than any other destination I've been too before, but I don't think it is bad as everyone makes it out to be.

In the past few years I've heard reports that it has become a lot safe. Even my 60-year-old uncle went there a couple of years ago. That is one of the reason I am going. Hearing his stories and listening to some Colombian music that he raved about moved the country up to the top of my South American list, after I'd already been to Argentina and Brazil.

Another reason is that around Christmas time my friend and

Tomorrow I fly!
I were cruising and boozing our way through a bunch of Colombian restaurants, bars, and dance halls. The Colombian chicas there were definitely sexy. We got talking to two of them, and they said that the situation in Colombia wasn't all bad, and that Cartagena was the place to go. With that in mind I checked flight prices. A $550 flight on Avianca was too hard to pass up.

That is why tomorrow I am flying to Cartagena, with a three-hour stopover in Bogota. My plan this trip is to have no plan. I could spend 12 days in Cartagena or I could spend 1 day each in 12 different Colombian towns. Who knows? I have never taken this kind of trip before. Usually I plan out where I'll be each day, and only rarely change my plans. I have no idea what will happen. I am also getting back to my solo travel roots. For the first time in two years I set off for the great unknown by myself. I can't wait.

I am going to try to stay up to date and add journal entries when I am in Colombia, but most likely they'll be words only. When I get back home on May 13th I will add the photos. I have absolutely no expectations. Stay tuned.

Tom, you should take Boo with you as your personal assistant. On second thought, that's not a good idea. He'll steal the ladies. BA
