Dear family and friends,
A very happy new year to you all!
We had a great time in Sydney, it was a great city to end our Australia travels.
We arrived there on Christmas eve and then on Christmas day went to Coogee Beach for a BBQ. It was the strangest Christmas we've ever had and did not really feel like Christmas except for when you looked down the packed out beach and saw most people (including us) wearing santa hats whilst sunbathing!!
We had a lovely day but to be honest Christmas in the UK is celebrated a lot more and we both missed being at home.
Between Christmas and New Year we spent time seeing the sights of Sydney, including the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Botanic Gardens. We also took a day trip to the Blue Mountains, which were stunning. We went on the same day as David and Laura, the couple we met on Magnetic Island and have been bumping into a lot during our trip down to Sydney. It was a really good trip and we went on a rather steep hike to the Wentworth falls, which was tiring but a very impressive
waterfall to see.
New Years Eve was crazy! We ended up going out at 7am!!!! Yes that is correct 7am. This is because there are various sites to go to to watch the midnight firework display but the point we wanted to go to had a great view of both the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and so therefore it wasn't just us wanting to get in! When we arrived at 7am we were surprised to see an already long queue, which we had to wait in until it started moving when the gates opened at 10am. Once into Mrs Macquaries point we managed to get a spot to sit right on the Harbours edge at the front with the view we wanted so were pleased the wait seemed to have paid off. We had our picnic and were chatting to some girls from London, which helped pass time in the afternoon and then at around 5pm things started happening, including an airshow and boat parade so the evening went quite quickly. At 9pm there was a family fireworks display, which were amazing and so we started to get very excited for the midnight show! The Midnight show was
spectacular, with fireworks coming from all over the harbour and off the bridge as well as 3 of the city skyscrapers. We were wondering if the all day wait was worth it when we were baking in the sun all day and desperate to cool down but I can tell you all, it definitely was! It was so great!
We were very tired on New Years Day but met up with David and Laura for a coffee in the afternoon and to say our goodbyes to them before our flight to Singapore!
We are now in Singapore, staying with our friend Philip. The flight was on an A380, the first time we've been on one and it was a huge double decker plane with great service (it felt like we were always getting fed!) It is very hot here but there has been showers during our first day sightseeing today. It seems like a very nice city so far and very clean. Will let you all know more soon!
We are now trying to plan our route for our last month up to Thailand and are really looking forward to this months travels. We cannot believe we
will be back in England this time next month, we're looking forward to seeing you all!
Thank you to everybody that sent us Christmas messages, we hope you all had a great Christmas too.
Lots of Love
