Kerry in the DinghyKerry in the DinghyKerry in the Dinghy

checking out the fog in the river
Tuesday, 23 November, 2010

Foggy again this morning. Around 8 Kerry took the dinghy out to the river to see how bad the fog was there. Not too bad, visibility around ½ to ¾ mile so off we went.

We read that the barge traffic gets heavier the further south you travel, and today proved that to be true. We encountered 8 tows today, six of them within a 1 ½ hour period, and most of them we met in curves. One we met early this morning and the eighth passed by our anchorage tonight.

We traveled almost 48 river miles today. The river was pretty winding, one ten mile section would have only been 6 miles if it had been straight. The scenery wasn’t as pretty as yesterday, fewer fall colors, lots of washed out banks and dead trees. We are just over 50 miles from Mobile Bay.

Since there isn’t much to report tonight, other than the abundance of tows, I thought this would be a good opportunity to answer questions posted in your comments. By the way, we do love to hear from you. So here goes:

boat, but only if in port. We have an electric oven, it’s quite small, but we could conceivably roast a bird in it. However, we are not. We will get into Mobile on Thursday around noon, and hope to find a restaurant open. We could fix chicken and dressing using stove top stuffing and canned chicken, but that would be a last resort. We will have to buy groceries in Mobile and it looks like we’ll have to shop on Black Friday. Yuck. As for who is cooking turkey at home, I think Michael is.

As for Sara and Trevor, we don’t know yet how far they are going to be traveling with us. We know for sure at least to the Keys, possibly up the east coast a ways. We’d love for them to come the whole Loop with us, but they haven’t decided for sure what they’re going to do.

Hmm, I guess there weren’t as many questions as I thought. I’ll try to take more pictures as we get into Mobile and cross the Bay.

Happy Thanksgiving
Guess we're all traveling this thanksgiving---a good reason to be grateful. We're heading up to VT to be with our kids and friend Candy. Lots of rain so far, but looking forward to seeing everyone. Jack, Jill and Geoff should be at our place in FL by now, Cathy is going to have Bill's daughter Cindy, and her daughter, Jessica as well. Mom was all excited about seeing everyone, tho, she has no idea Geoff is back in the States, so she'll have a big surprised. Had we known Geoff was going to be there, I think we would have stayed home, but it was going to be a "surprise" for everyone---so much for surprises. Sara looked good with blue hair---what color is yours Charlie? I think Kerry should have colored his as well. Hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving, and that you find a restaurant to have something other than canned chicken and stove top dressing.
