Hi Everyone - Well its taken me 2 days to get back to you but we have been VERY BUSY!
After my message that we'd arrived safely albeit minus our luggage we went out for food & refreshments.
We are staying very close to an area called Campo De Fiori which is where they have market stalls full of wonderful stands of fresh veges and fruits, olives, cheeses & wonderful things in general. Here we had our 1st italian pasta & 2 each of the biggest glasses of Peroni beer we've ever seen! We exlored around the stalls & then returned to our little room where we crashed at about 6 p.m.
The next day it was raining but it didn't deter us we headed out just to explore on foot with no real destinations in mind. This proved to be lots of fun as we found ourselves walking along the narrow, cobblestone alleyways they call streets here & behold you would emerge into a wonderful Piazza- a large public space, all different but amazing. The 1st one we found like this was Piazza Navona which is one of the most popular with Bernini's Fountain of the 4 rivers which is majestic & beautiful.
The Piazza is full of people painting, selling pictures ,eating at the cafes that line the perimeter orjust admiring the 3 fountains that dominate the space. Nearby was the Museo Romawhere we spent a couple of hours. the main attraction here for us was not so much the exhibits but the building itself which was beautiful & the former residence of an influential family. Max couldn't get over the size of the doors and got into trouble for touching them! The architecture was beautiful. From here we found one of the many open top, double decker buses that take tourists around. You can get on & off at the designated stop for the bus u r on. We bought a 2 day pass & got off at the colloseum.
It was unbelievable. So immense and very impressive. We kept saying to each other that we couldn't believe we were really here. From there we walked to the Roman Forum complex, again Today we got back on the bus & visited 2 churches, Santa Maria Degli Angeli which looks like a pile of old brick rubble onj the outside but when u go in - magnificent. So big with huge, beautiful paintings & decorated ceilings - truly beautiful. An organist was filling the place with music on the biggest organ we've ever seen - not that Max & I have seen many church organs! We then walked to another famous church that is known for its mosaic floors - Santa
Maria Maggiore - again huge inside & beautiful. i can now understand what people mean when they say something is breathtaking. everything we've seen so far has made us feel like this. Tonight we are going out for a nice dinner in the Travestere quarter & at the moment Max is enjoying another beer after a big day. We are having a great time & tomorrow morning off to Venice in the train! P.S Forgot to say when we arrived home last night our suitcases where in our room! The lovely receptionist said she rang <6 hassled them "because if u don't do that in Rome, nothing happens!"
