Vancouver

16th - 20th October 2010

We arrived in Vancouver after a 2 and half hour flight with Alaska airlines. The flight was fine, thankfully! We had to pay $20 each to check in a bag which is a bit annoyed as all our flights and baggage is suppose to be inclusive. Anyway, we arrived in Vancouver and waited for my rucksack to arrive, and we waited and waited some more, until there was no one else left and no bags left!! So I went to the desk, they had my rucksack aside it had burst open. Its wearing very thin, but were so close to home I need to give it some TLC. Turns out he zip burst, but there’s two zips, so its ok. I usually know were I have spare space in the bag, but I can honestly say there is not an inch of breathing space inside the bag, its jam packed!! Ste’s bag is still going strong, it has the most stretchy material ive ever seen, haha!! It does take two people (one standing on the bag, holding the zips, the other zipping it up) to close the bags, but the important thing is they close!!!!

So anyway we got our bags, eventually and then got the skyrail to downtown and walked a couple of blocks to our hotel. We stayed in the sandman for one night cause most other places were booked out for the Saturday night. Then the following morning we moved next door to a place called YWCA hotel for 3 nights. Its perfect here because its a hotel but it has a kitchen and lounge on each floor, which means we can cook ourselves, yey!!! It has a great location too. So because it was a Saturday night we thought we’d go for a drink. Grandville street is the place to go. They close off this street to traffic, I dont know why but with lots of police around I can only imagine its for the safety of everyone. The street is full of pubs and clubs, so I presume the streets get very busy when the clubs and pubs close. At 10.30 pm, there were que’s everywhere to get into these clubs, so many people!!! We went to an irish pub for two. It was a small little pub and when a few lads walked in, the man behind the bar said sorry we have no room for you in here, I wont be serving you a drink unless you have a seat. Who says that?!?! There was only a handful of seats in the place. Anyway it was packed with irish people, been in canada we decided to leave so it actually felt like we were in Canada. We had a couple of drinks and a great laugh. I noticed the style in Vancouver is very casual, even on a Saturday night there wasn’t many girls in heels or dresses, I liked it though! I already have a great feel from this city, I think its in the “I could definitely live here” category.

We had a great time here in Vancouver. After a few welcome to Vancouver drinks, we met with Ste’s friend from Lucan, had a beer and some lunch, really nice guy, he told us a few places to visit. The next day we took a stroll that turned into an all day trip. We walked down to the waterfront, its really nice there. There’s a walk along the harbour that goes the whole way down to Stanley park, and through the park. It took us an hour to get to the waterfront were we got some lunch. I got “the best egg salad sandwich in the world” from a place called “grandma Lee’s” I knew it had to be a good sandwich with a name like that, and oh my god it was delicious!! It was exactly like that salad mix that only granny’s know how to make! Afterwards we continued to stroll along the harbour until we got to Stanley park. The weather is gorgeous, its a cool (freezin in the evening once the sun goes in) but very refreshing, it kinda feels like a summer’s evening in Ireland. It was a gorgeous walk, all the tree’s are a mix between yellow, green and red’s. We also passed some seaplanes taken off and landing which was cool, ive never seen them before. Another half hour walk and we found an aquarium, so we went in for something to do, it was actually brilliant, 3 hours later we left the place. It was great, it had a little bit of everything, we also managed to watch a dolphin, seals/ sea lions and beluga whales show. The Beluga whales were amazing, huge big white whales, and they had a great underwater area where you can watch them. After this it was getting late so we decided to walk back. We took the shorter route this time and walked through the city instead. Vancouver city is lovely, I don’t know what it is about it, there’s just a nice relaxed atmosphere. Anyway that was our adventures day!! Its great the place were staying has a kitchen so it was spag bol for dinner lasnight (Ste makes the best spag bol from scratch!) and fajita’s tonight, yummy!!!

We also took a visit to Granville Island. We got a little water taxi across the water to the island, were there is a few pubs and a huge market that sell everything you can imagine!! They have a huge food area, we bought a massive steak and some fresh vegetables, chef ste did his thing and I had the nicest dinner in the world, im serious!! We also treated to ourselves to pecan pie and a fresh fruit trifle which sitting out on the harbour. It was very warm today, I love the weather here, just a pity we’re missing the snow. After a stroll around Granville island we headed back to the hotel and made a few booking’s for tomorrow, we’re heading to whistler! I really love Vancouver, maybe its just he season we’re in, but the city is really pretty and friendly.
