Today we woke to a wet and overcast day. We packed a picnic lunch and set off on our long drive to the Freycinet National Park. The first part of the drive took us out through the city and into the mountains. Much of the road wound around and up through the mountains and when the road levelled out we found ourselves driving parallel to a river. This was a very scenic drive. This part of the drive took you through farmlands of sheep and lambs grazing. Then we reached the town of Orford and turned east and headed out toward the coast, still passing a lot of grazing land with the ocean on one side and the green fields with tall mountains behind, on the other side. Everywhere you look in Tasmania is scenic and beautiful. The mountains, the waterways, the sea and the grazing lands are all beautiful.
The road continued winding up a beautiful coastline and after about an hour from Orford we reached the town of Swansea. This is a lovely town situated on the waterfront. We stopped here for morning tea before continuing on our drive to the Freycinet National Park (about another 45minutes on from Swansea)
As we turned into the National Park, three enormous peaks stood before us. The view was stunning. We parked the car at the base of the Wine Glass Bay lookout and hiked up to the lookout. It was raining and windy and very cold but the view from the top was fabulous.
After our walk we drove up to the lighthouse and sat in the car and ate our picnic lunch, it was too wet and windy to get out of the car. We then drove back to Swansea for a hot cuppa before driving back to Hobart.
I think we drove about 400kms today, a long drive but a great day.
