I hear them cheering from our hotel room. The gobs of people walking the street in lederhosen at 7 am. They are holding beer and walking 350 meters to the Biergarten of the Worlds Largest and Oldest festival known as Oktoberfest. Wondering if it’s crowded is like asking if the sky is blue. Imagine a football field with beer vendors on the track, a few fast food stands and then put say, a million people in the middle of the football field and tell them to go to vender to vender for a beer and food. Now, if walking in the crowd sounds a bit of challenge, imagine them ¾ of the people drunk. That’s Oktoberfest.

We walked the maze of Oktoberfest hoping to have a bier in a tent last night (Friday night.) Heck, we couldn’t even get in the tents. I was sneaky and got into a couple to take a few pictures. The only way to get in is with a reservation. Outside all the bier tents is a biergarten with open seating. Dan and I stood around and walked most of the biergarten hoping to score a seat; no chance. It’s sad,

is she really holding all those beers?
we flew an entire day and we couldn’t even get a bier at Oktoberfest.

We left Oktoberfest and walked almost 2 miles to one of Germany’s oldest bierhaus Hofbrauhaus. We thought, mistakenly we could get a bier there. HA! We sat outside and had a bier across the street. So much for day one.

By 9 am Dan & I were back at the Oktoberfest and sad to say, we were not the first ones. In fact, we were not the first million to show. The bier tents were already filled with lines several hundred meters long of people waiting to get in. We did get lucky and got a table at some tent in the biergarten (outside). At first, there is an empty seat here and there, however by 10 am stand room only. People standing the in the aisle like vultures waiting for someone to move to grab their seat. It just so happens, we choose the tent that the Italians’ like to drink at. We chatted with the people from Italy and a German man bought us a bier.

And then it really got crowded and rowdy. When bier was spilled on you, you got a cheer, (PROST) when someone got a bier, when someone brush against you, PROST. For any reason, a toast to good health was given. By Noon, Dan & I were already on our second bier, slow by most standards and feeling no pain. Food. We needed food. Dan found us a half a henchen each, chicken and we ate with our fingers and shared with our new friends. Prost! Finally, I had a bier at Oktoberfest.
