Back in Istanbul

We went to Bosphorus Harley Davidson, it was an interesting experience. There was the usual levels of customer service. We got a business card and left our details so contact has been made and we can start to build a relationship. We learnt how much a new Harley will cost in Turkey, which I was sort of aware of anyway, but it is now confirmed - road vehicles are considered a luxury and taxed accordingly. If I were to buy from them they would do all the paperwork which is very complex (even more so for foreigners) and that is included, so all I would have to do is turn up give them my details (passport) and a great deal of cash.

They were of the view that even if I tried to import mine there would be costs which may make it prohibitive to try, this needs checking which we can do in Izmir, I am sure they were being honest insofar as they know, but it makes sense to explore this further. The reality will be that unless I am recognised as retired by the Turkish State permanent import of a bike will not be possible anyway. It is looking increasingly unlikely that we will be able to bring the bike.

So this leaves two groups of questions for further discussion
Do we need or want a vehicle? Would we use it enough to make it worthwhile? What will it add to our lifestyle?
and
If so do we want a Harley? Would a big Japanese bike be a better bet? Or a BMW? The Harley will cost a bit more, not vastly more but it is significant, would this be money best saved?

Apart from that we arrived safely and have just been hanging out in Istanbul. Not been able to get a connection on hotel wifi. Tomorrow we had down to Izmir (we have booked a flight) and thence to Seluk

thanks for the update. i think i would consider all possibilities also. maybe look at a bike that i could get serviced everywhere, and a good parts availability would need to be considered. not sure how harley service is over there. good luck with your move and have fun on this trip!!!!! chuck
