Trying to get relaxed and refreshed on this trip but I keep feeling that I should be a little active on my first full day in San Carlos. I planned on being active tomorrow. Today I decided to go into San Carlos. Had to take a taxi there since, though San Carlos has a little bus service, no bus comes out to where this "resort" is at. I had the front deck call me a taxi and after just a few minutes it appeared. After geting in I could tell that I was in somewhat of a tourist town. This taxi had tinted windows that were rolled up since the ac was blowing nice cold air (all of the taxis I had used so far on this trip had all of the windows down, with dusty hot air blowing in).
I told the driver to take me to San Carlos and he insisted that I give him a specific location. So I whipped out the folded map I picked up at the front desk. I scanned for something appealing looking in the middle and settled on Senor's Fish Tacos. He drove me past Cerro Tetakawi, past the Fisherman's Marina, past
a sporty marina, and to the restaurant. It was a small, ramshackle place that didn't look very hospitipal so I sat there for a few seconds and told him to take me back to the marina we had just passed. He turned around and we drove maybe the half mile back to the marina and he drove me right down to the water behind a large hotel beside the marina and told me to call the "resort" so that they could call him to come pick me up when I needed a ride back; I think that is what he said.
The marina wasn't deserted but there were only a few people around. A lot of nice boats were secured in their slips, some restaurants and shops that nobody was eating or shopping at, the employees of one place standing outside talking to the employees of the place right beside it. I returned to the main street in front of the hotel, walked down a street that ended up being a cul-de-sac that led to yet another gated hotel on the beach. There wasn't much to this tourist town. A lot of empty, dust lots, houses for sale, stores
for rent, gated hotels and a few people driving around. Just a little tourist strip along the Sea of Cortez that, to some extent, catered to a few water activities and retired people form the north. The retired people were not around; I had seen the empty RV parks when I got into town. Too hot for them now and since they were not here, nobody here to cater to them.
I decided to eat before I walked in the blistering heat to the other side of town. Near the marina was a restaurant that was open, thought another solo guy and me were it's only customers while I was there. Finally, fish tacos, and a nice bottle of water. It was actually a coffee shop that also had a small grill inside. The place was called Evie's and I am assuming that was the name of the lady running the place. She had bags of different coffees for sale but, at just under $10 a bag, I decided against buying Italian roast from a Mexican coffee shop in San Carlos. Plus, I bet I could find better prices at the Wal Mart in Guaymas, which was right beside
the new Sam's club.
