This will be as far north as our caravan will travel, a short but very pictureskew road made a fantastic drive to Port Douglas, and our week here is shaping up to be a fantastic one. The start of World Cup football (not soccer), State of Origin 2, and yes, Steve’s birthday. Though when that paragraph was written, in the present tense, it is really the past tense because the first part of the blog is being penned on Wednesday 16 June.
We arrived early Sunday and take a stroll into Port Douglas for the markets. Steve manages to stop Debby buying more jewellery by promising a refreshing cup of sugar cane juice - hey not bad - and Deb makes a colourful friend. We get ourselves weighed and WOW, either the scales are wrong or Deb has lost 2kg and Steve close to 5kg. Well, we are doing a lot of walking!
Off to Mossman Gorge on Monday and another 4km is notched up. This popular little spot is in the process of having an elevated walkway built which seems to be the in thing at the moment.
Tuesday is a drive north crossing the Daintree River on the
cable barge as we head for Cape Tribulation, which we think will be (or not) our furthest point north. On the way we stop at The Discovery Centre. This place is great. The elevated platform gets you right into the tree canopy. Whilst the day is a little overcast it does not spoil the fantastic scenery where, as they say, ‘the rainforest meets the ocean’. This should (if not already) be on your bucket list of things to do.
Wednesday 16 June - Steve’s big day, over to him.
“State of origin 2, Queen’s birthday and oh, it’s my birthday too! Have already had phone calls from Susan and Sarah, drank a bucks fizz, opened my pressie from Dometic (just another bog standard present), read my e-mails and text messages, and it’s not yet 8.30am! Anyway, I’m off to enjoy the rest of the day, don’t worry, back soon, soon as I’ve sobered up!
Hiya, back already. Well this is how the day unfolded, though I’m relying on Deb for all this information as it all became a blur after 11am (that’s the alcoholic mixers not the time). Most of the day, it has to be said, was spent
visiting licensed premises and the odd bit of site seeing. The evening started at 4.30pm with an hour and a half river cruise on the Lady Douglas. Hey, we saw 3 crocs, the biggest being well over 3m long, we watched it as it slid off the mud bank and swam along side us for several minutes. Back to shore we headed to the Thai for tea before stepping across the road to the Central Hotel to watch the poor Blues get smashed by the boys in Maroon. Go Queenslanders! Someone suggested a nightcap but after 2 bottles of red wine added to drinks on the river cruise one half of us suggested getting home would be the sensible thing to do, but when have we ever been sensible”
It wouldn’t surprise you to know that we didn’t move from the camp site on Thursday until early evening when we drove to Port Douglas headland to watch the sunset.
On Friday we did another river trip. This time on the Daintree River from Daintree Village. Yet more crocs and some stunning birds, with a stop on the way home on a beach all to ourselves.
Saturday we spent
on the beach again, at Port Douglas, before an evening out with Pete & Jill (friends from UK who now live in Melbourne), who just happened to be having a long weekend in Port Douglas. We have a message for Pete, we hope the sprained ankle, mozzie bites and tick problem have all cleared up.
We had a discussion - do we spend another week in fantastic Port Douglas or do we move on as planned? Moving on won. So our next bog, sorry blog, will come from exciting inland places yet to be decided.
Notes from Editor:
What happened at the FIFA World Cup?
The next blog could be delayed due to one author recovering from a very painful piercing, but thanks are given for all your suggestions
