Yeah, yeah, we know…it’s been a long time since you’ve heard from us. Bet some of you think we have just disappeared off the face of the earth! Well, we’ve been around the world and half way back again and we’ve got a lot of blogging to catch up on. Our last post was nearly a year ago and here’s a quick recap of what’s been going on in our life as travelers…
Last June, we left Europe for the United States and spent some time in North Carolina with family, before returning to New Orleans where all this began. Our trip was now officially over. We were back where it all started fourteen months before. Our travels took us through 14 different countries, 78 different cities, towns, crossroads, villages, islands, etc. and we slept at 100 different hotels, guesthouses, hostels, bungalows, huts, boats, trains, buses and other places. We traveled by local bus, car, taxi, tuk-tuk, motorcycle, pick-up trucks, overnight train, ferry boat, dug-out canoe, jumbo jet , elephant, horse and buggy and sometimes several of these methods in one day! All that, to cover 40,000 miles or 63,000 kilometers.
Some things we will always remember…swimming with a
whale shark & turtles, orangutans, riding local busses, sliding down sand dunes, komodo dragons, white sandy beaches, elephants outside our window, rhinos, jungle treks at night, the food and all the good friends we have met along the way.
Things we want to forget but can’t…cleaning up after each other when we were sick, going four days without a shower, running out of toilet paper and having to use Ruthie’s sock, the guy on the bus asking if we had lice yet, the nights we slept with our clothes on because we didn’t want to touch the sheets, and realizing we were those stinky backpackers.
We quickly settled back into our nice comfortable home with all the goodies. After living in so many hotel rooms during our travels our house was so nice we didn’t leave for days! Returning to New Orleans after more than a year away was a bit like being a tourist in our own town. We had a good time by going to festivals, listening to live music, eating amazing food and of course seeing our friends. But, as good as it was to be home, it wasn’t long before we started missing the
island lifestyle. We wanted to get back to the beaches, diving, people we met, the simplicity and realizing you aren’t sure what day it is, never mind the date. It’s hard to explain all the reasons; mainly it is where we are happy right now.
We returned to Phi Phi Island last September and our adventure continues…

Hard to stop traveling
I'm Stephanie's neighbor. Mary Ann and I got the travel bug right after college, did a stint with the Peace Corps in Korea and have yet to get over the travel bug. Only thing that slowed us down was children, but that not for long. Good to see you are back on the road and feeling that is where you should be. Good luck and keep the blogs coming.
