Out and About in Leon

Hi again!

Leon is a city of old churches. I walk past and take a few pictures but touring these really isn´t my thing. And it seems most people are shopping and not in the churches anyway. Of course it is a Spanish Colonial City and Catholic Churches seem to be the only kind. For history or archeological buffs it would be quite interesting. Few churches are in good repair, but there are a few which are quite beautiful. I do enjoy the parks near the churches where the old men play chess and dominos and there is ice cream and snacks to buy.

Within 12 blocks in any direction there are as many churches as well as museums. Of course there are bars and hostels and these are the happening places with loud music, pool and lots of drinking. I have prefered to stay around my guesthouse where the garden is beautiful and the staff is friendly and talkative. Here I can use the internet and only have to go to internet cafes occasionally because the guesthouse computer doesn´t recognize my pictures until I manipulate them into a new file (strange, but I have got a routine for gettting it done).

Today was the first day in which it did not rain all day. And it was quite warm. It would have been worse had there been no rain at all. I can´t believe that the women and men go around in long tight pants when the weather is so hot. Even in my capris, I feel the sweat drip down my back.

Church El Calvarlo
This is the prettiest church and best maintained. It has a lovely park nearby.

Church of San Juan
This church is quite old and in bad repair but is only 2 blocks from my guesthouse.

Church la Recoleccion
This church is also near the guesthouse. I use it as a landmark to help me find my way home.

I enjoyed the most wonderful chocolate and almond pastry from a french bakery I bought near this park.

Heros and Martyrs
All cities have a Heros and Martyrs Museum that features the favorite sons of the city.

Study Buddy
One of the many turtles that live in the garden at the guesthouse. Apparently, he doesn´t mind Spanish Grammar as much as I do.

When sick......
When sick but not down and out, one can study Spanish in lovely surroundings.

Cure all
If you get a cold, this is what people who know are telling me to do. Take Flor de Cana Rum and Honey. They tell me it cures all that ails you.

Money
It looks as if I am rich, but all this is worth $20 and change.

Can´t Wait to Try a Dose on You!
I´m all ready to mix up a dose or two for you. I haven´t even opened the bottle. I will have to guard my bags carefully so that the bottle doesn´t get broken. That rum by the way was the most expensive from the store. It is aged 7 years and I think there are even more expensive ones. I chose the amber one and not the clear, because it has more sugar. I was looking for the little shot bottles because I thought I could pack easier but couldn´t find them. That bottle cost me $5 at the supermercado.

Thanks for your nice message. I also love that mantela which the propietor has placed on the common area dining room. I love it so much that i have been looking for one to take home to place on my own table. It really is bright and cheerful and makes the table look extra special! Dawn
