Tortugal Resort and MarinaTortugal Resort and MarinaTortugal Resort and Marina

This is the restaurant and dock area; our bungalow is behind.
We arrived in Rio Dulce on Friday afternoon, after a nice trip by mini bus from Copan Ruinas to Rio Dulce. It was a six hour trip with a stop at the ruins in Quirigua, and cost us each $20 US. On board were an American couple from San Francisco and a Honduran family with two very cute girls who proceeded (after I gave them pairs of glasses with fake eyes..thank you Haddy!) to help me work on my Spanish pronunciation...

When we arrived here, a helpful man at the dock convinced us to stay at Tortugal, instead of Denny's Beach as we had planned. While we were trying to work out a place to stay, Bill checked email, and found that the house deal is done!!!! So we had a beer on the dock to celebrate...and the boat for Tortugal showed up a bit later...

Tortugal is close to town, and less expensive. It is also a bit of paradise! We have our own beautiful thatched roof bungalow, and everyone (which as of last night was just us) shares a very clean bathroom. There are free kayaks to use, and good food served on the dock..

This is a view of the countryside arounbd the ruins. Imagine this with all the farms needed to support the city of over 27,000 people...
There are quite a few boats from all over docked here on the lake, as Lago Izabal is the only harbor in the Caribbean protected from hurricanes. This hotel/restaurant/marina is about 4 years old, and is owned by a man from Connecticut!

It rained hard most of the night and morning, but the sound on the thatched roof was soothing. When the rain would let up, the jungle outside our bungalow filled with the sounds of insects and frogs. There are three resident cats, one of which was determined to spend the night on our couch..we finally put him out, being unsure what he would do if he had to pee in the night...and not wanting to find out.

We took the hotel kayaks this morning and paddled about 30 minutes up the lake to an old Spanish fort, built to protect the nickel mines from pirates in the 1600s. It is the weekend, and there were lots of Guatemalans from the city out picnicking and renting jet skis...it poured part way across the lake, but we dried off as soon as the sun came out.

We are not sure how long we'll stay here...some people come

and never leave!

We already miss you...not a reflection on Allison at all, mind you...and we're looking forward to hearing the stories in person! And congratulations on the house sale! :) Sounds like a fantastic trip, Lynn, thanks so much for sharing. Safe continued journey, Sabia
