Vatican
As seen from the road in front We have had a great day so far today. Mom is reading WWII notes from Uncle jim in preparation fro tomorrow at Anzio Beach. Larry is singing with the Ipod and sleeping. We didn't venture out so early today as our B&B is just a couple or three blocks from the Vatican. Till (B&B manager) brought us our breakfast...great cappacino, juice, and pasteries...yum-o. We started out at the Vatacian..unbeliveable! Unfortunatelly the Sistine Chapel was closed for May Day (National Holiday) so we will miss seeing it...gives us a reason to return. We joined a open deckk bus tour which was recommended by Till. He was right on the money. It took us everywhere we wanted to go and with headphones gave us the history of many sites. We loved it so much we went around twice. It was the typical hop on hop off tour so we got off where we wanted.
Our main agenda today was to find Mussolini's palace suring WWII. Whenn Uncle jim was here he took a key from the gate. Very hard to find as it isn't very popular here. Many people think it should be demolished because it pays tribute to a dictator, however
Castel St. Angelo
Sophia this is a real castle that was built in the 2nd century and became a fortress for teh popes. It was in use as a prision until the end of the 19th century it is now being restored. We went all over the place trying to find it and finally on stop 4 after much frustration we found it. It was across form the Piazza Venezia. Most people wondered why we were so interested in this place. Mom was happy! I took many pictures...one just of the keyhole in the gate.
The colosseo was the most amazing place - to think that it was over 2000 years old and so much history happened there. Larry and I are going back tonight to se it in the dark all lighted up. When you look at it you wonder how it was possible to build such a structure without modern day tools.
We ate at a Burger King today...just curious to see how different they were...most meals were the same as home...now McDonalds had a totally different menu...some interesting things...we hope to try one sandwich in particular before we leave here...probably at the airport. Of course we have bought from the street vendors...and wow do Italians love their gelato....there are two or three on every street...love it, love it, love it....
The thing I was most amazed about was all the graffiti...there is
Castel St. Angelo
Sophia..we have more pictures of this castle graffiti everywhere and some of it took a long time to do so why weren't they caught. How can you deface a place like this? Refer to the pics I took.
Larry and I just got back from Trevi fountain and were we amazed. It is down an alley that I thought we might get mugged in....I even stopped and asked a family if we were going the right way. Hard to believe...but we went and threw our money in....thought there wouldn't be a big crowd because there is a huge concert in Rome tonight..some subway stops are even closed and additional people hired to work the train station and various restaurants...you sure could tell as the subway was full!!!
We are back in our room getting ready for bed...want to post pics tonight. Hope everyone is enjoying my ramblings.....
