Technically we went to Brenu Beach again which is near Elmina....
So this weekend we decided that as it was pretty much our last weekend travelling around Ghana we wanted it to be relaxing after quite a stressful week at the hospital. (We saw a still birth at the same time as a healthy birth resulting in me passing out, i'm going to blame the heat and well the fact that it was very distressing! The still birth baby was breeched as well and all blue, horrifying.)
We left bright and early on Saturday not really sure how to get to Brenu but we knew its where we wanted to be! So got a tro to Accra and then somehow found a tro to Cape Coast. That tro was luxury! By far the safest and fanciest one we'd been in but also the most expensive! We then somehow managed to get a taxi down to the beach. It was such a relief when we started recognising the roads we'd driven along before in the truck! We arrived at the beach to find it heaving we students from Cape Coast Polytechnic! but it was bad at all, like all other
my picture!
I took this picture! Harriet took all the rest (apart from the one's of herself!) But this is one I'm really proud of! Its not the best (Harriet's amazing at this photography business!) but still! Ghanians they were very friendly and we spent the rest of the afternoon (we arrived at like 3...) just sitting on the sand chatting witth them before we ran into our room to hide from the rain. Yes it rained. But that didn't spoil our time at all! We may have accidently fallen asleep to be woken by the lady who ran the restuarant/bar knocking on our door to tell us our food was ready (we were the only guests and by this point there wasn't another soul around. All the new friends we'd made had gone home and it was ridiculously peaceful!).
We had our amazing seafood meal relaxing in the restuarant on the sand (it was pretty much an open canopy construction sort of thing on the sand, its hard to explain, ask when we get back and we'll draw you a picture!) and it started to rain again. The lady who had given us our meal efficiently cleaned up and went home leaving us all alone on the most beautiful beach in the world. Harriet and I had a good chat about how sad we were to be leaving the beach in the morning and Ghana in
general. We're moving away from Ho on Sunday and it is the most distressing feeling! We''ve made a true home here and some amazing friends! We are excited about moving on but this is the part we hate the most, the thought of moving on and potentially never seeing the friends we've made here ever again!
But we didn't dwell on that, we had a nice early night in a room with a quiet fan which we appreciated and for the first time that week I didn't wake up at 5! We slept till like 7.30!
We thought we'd venture out and find breakfast but everything was still closed so we went for a walk to build up our appetite! Last time we were on Brenu it was overcast and we never made it to the end of the beach but this time we went the whole way, taking some beautiful pictures as we went!
When it was finally time to leave the sadness crept back but we'd decided we were going to meet George and Courage in Accra so we hoped on the next trotro in the hope that they'd cheer us up! But we managed to get
lost. After feeling so relaxed from the beach, being in Accra for even 5 minutes had stresssed us out again! We really dislike Accra. We weren't lost we just didn't understand where George wanted us to be! So in protest we decided to have a drink in a small tavern sort of place. Error. This crazy drunk man decided we were the most interesting people in the world. We kept telling him to leave us alone and go away but he wanted our phone numbers and kept chatting in broken english which we just didn't understand! We were the rudest we'd ever been in Ghana telling him to go away and leave us alone and just out right rude but he didn't get the hint at all so we left. Which he thought was the cue to follow us! We ended up asking the fanice man to tell hime to leave us alone. And he did! We had new appreciation for the fan ice men! Not only do they feeding us the most amazing treats they also help us rid ourselves of tagger ons! Its not like the man could or would have done anything he was just really really
really annoying!!!!!!!!
We finally found George and headed over to see Courage and his family who are the loveliest people! Although I did somehow manage to be beaten up by his 7 year old sister after a tickling game got out of hand.... Not that she realised at all that she'd gone to far but found some interesting bruises! She's ridiculously sweet though, another person we're going to miss a lot!
We finally hopped onto a tro back to Ho where the new volunteer was waiting for us in the house! But the tro took forever to fill up and we didn't actually get home till 9! (Its very difficult recognising our junction along the road at night but we did it! Thats right thats how much we've become comfortable in this place, we recognise the crazy junction in the dark!) We met the new girl Izzy who's very nice, here for 4 weeks and is coming with us to the new village on sunday!
So that was our weekend! This week has been a week of lasts in Ho. We're trying not to dwell on the fact that we're going but its there looming over us!
hopefully we'll be back one day, checking out how everything has changed around Ho! not got anything planned this week, although we're going to theater tomorrow so might see our first operation!
Stay tuned!
