April 7 we woke up at 6 to catch our flight to Rome. We were taking the hostel’s “airport transfer service” which turned out to be the guy who had been working at reception the night before driving us like a manic in his station wagon from the hostel to the airport. We got to the airport so quickly, we again had plenty of time. In fact, our flight on blu-express (yes, that was the name of our airline—scary, right?) wasn’t on the screen yet. We got concerned because there was a flight at the exact same time as ours to the exact same place on EasyJet, so maybe blu-express worked with EasyJet? We went to their counter to confirm, where the person looked at us and was just like, your flight isn’t on the board yet. You’re not on our airline. Whoops.

We safely got to Rome, waited for an hour for luggage again, split an airport-shuttle cab type thing with two Asian students studying in London this semester who were staying at a super fancy hotel not too far from our cheap hostel. We ate lunch, checked in, and walked around the city seeing all the sites—Piazza del Cinquecentro, Piazza della Repubblica, Santa Maria degli Angeli, and the Trevi Fountain where we also stopped for gelato.

It was a beautiful day—so much warmer than it had been in Sicily. After we finished our gelato we walked up to the Spanish Steps and saw the Villa Medici where there was a sign saying there were guided tours in lots of different languages at 5:30 pm (and it was like 5:15—perfect!) We went in asking for the English guided tour, but they informed us that today they only had Italian and French. We decided that since we weren’t doing anything and didn’t know anything about this place, we might as well take the tour in French! We probably would have gotten more out of it if we had taken the Tour in English, but we still understood a lot which was really cool!

Afterwards we met up with 5 other DGs in Rome—3 who are studying there and 2 who we were sharing the hostel room with—Caitlin, Steph, Ally, Danielle, and Megan. We went to the Rome girl’s favorite pizza place and the we all split nutella-ricotta calzones for dessert, which may or may not have been the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. By the time we finished dinner around 10:30 or 11, Allison and I were exhausted from such a long day, so we took the subway (saw a school group of Americans carrying an iHome, dancing to Italian music) and went back to our hostel and straight to bed.
