First of all Happy Birthday Dad! We largely spent your birthday driving to Santillana del Mar. It was a nice drive and we stopped in at some gorgeous little beaches and could see the snowy mountains in the background of some of them. We did get lost in the countryside at one point though when Karen (our GPS) kept sending us down closed roads! It was a maze of narrow streets in amongst the villages. The countryside in this area (in the NW) of Spain is very different to the south. The vineyards and olive groves are replaced with forests and rolling green hills with dairy cows.

Santillana del Mar is such a cute place! Thanks for the recommendation Kate & Keith! It is a lovely medieval village with tonnes of little deli shops. Santillana del Mar is the place to stay if you want to visit the world famous Altamira caves. Unfortunately the caves were closed on Monday - the only day we could go. Bad timing! We really loved staying in Santillana del Mar though. It was nice to have another break from the hectic cities!

Hey Lysh and Richie, I'm happy to see that you made it to santilla del mar and liked it, but what a shame about the caves. Anyway it seems like you are seeing just about all of spain. I'm sure it is all amazing. Are you getting tired of sight seeing yet? when do you leave spain for italy? I wish we could meet up with you again before you head off to continue your trip, but anyway have a blast. Keith
