Hello from Australia! We arrived safe and sound in Brisbane yesterday after an extremely easy couple of flights. Neither our plane to Los Angeles nor the huge plane to Brisbane were full so we were allowed to change seats. The flight attendant on the 15 hr. flight took Barry and I to the back of the plane and gave us one row of five seats to ourselves! She recommended we force ourselves to eat the full dinner even though it was 1:30 a.m. and to try to sleep afterwards. That would help us with the jet lag. I stretched out over 3 seats and slept for five hours. Barry watched five movies. Neither of us suffered any jet lag. Go figure.

Ben and Mandy, our former navy friends, met us at the Brisbane airport with huge smiles and hugs. It was great to see them again after fifteen years. They drove us to their home in Closeburn, about 40 mins outside of Brisbane. We are charmed by their home. It's a new comtemporary-style house built on 5 acres; there are green rolling hills and pastures all around. They gave us our own little guest cottage to stay in and stocked the fridge with breakfast goodies. We feel pretty privileged. They barbequed dinner on the patio last night and we enjoyed meeting their 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son. We discovered Lamingtons! I read somewhere that Aussies all over the country love to compare them. They're a dessert, sort of a fluffy white cake surrounded by a light coating of chocolate and coconut. Delicious! We may have to try them out all over Australia.

This morning we awoke at 5:30 to kookaburras chattering outside our window! There are lorakeets, plovers, curlews, egrets, etc. too. Barry says he feels like he's in the centre of a botanical garden.

It's comfortably hot here, probably about 30. It's easy to get sunburned even though its sometimes cloudy. Today Mandy is taking us sightseeing in Brisbane and tomorrow, because she has to work, she may drop us off close to town so we can wander. On Saturday Ben is going to drive us to the airport really early so we can fly off to Uluru.

It's wonderful to be here!
