Hi Everyone,
I am now in the South Island, came over from Wellington last Thursday, 21st. Everyone says that the South Island is more beautiful and interesting than the North Island, well, it is definately living up to its name, its really mountainous and rugged. I spent a fantastic weekend at the Abel Tasmin National Park (named after the Dutch explorer that actually discovered NZ before Cook!) - about an hours drive from Nelson. Everything in NZ is so organised - a water taxi book my bag to the boat and I hiked in about 15 kms - I stayed on a boat moored at Anchorage Bay. It was just what I needed after some dodgy hostels!! I did plenty of hikes along the coast and had my first sea kayak! The sea was quiet calm and we saw seals with their babies up close, baby penguins and a Reef Heron, which is seemingly quite rare!
There was an eclectic mix of people, some only staying a night and then moving on, I thought about asking for long term rates! A real crocadile dundee character called Chris owns the boat and was really nice!!! along with his able assistant, Lucy who fed us well on BBQ steaks, rice and salad and a very tasty vegaterian chilli pie!!
We spent the evenings on the top deck having a wee glass of wine and putting the world to rights! A ritual seemed to become established - jumping off the roof of the boat before dinner! Trust me it is a long way up, especially when you have to get on the ladder that is on the outside of the boat. I refused until Chris said I wasn't allowed to leave until I did it!! Maybe not a bad option!! See photos attached!!
Oh well, back on the road! Next stop Greymouth overnight and then on to Franz Joseph!

If you are adding a comment - can you add your name cos I don't know otherwise!
Take care
Sue xx
