Finally we got out of Agra! But with a massive change of plans though, instead of going to Khajuraho trying to get to Varanasi we ended booking the only train out to Allahabad for one night after three stuck in Agra. Over the north of India there is a massive fog that is covering the whole area so trains, planes and anything else that helps to move people is cancelled mostly all the time.
So after the taxi to Agra and a little sleep we headed out to do some exploring and found out to do a nice day trip to an abandoned city 40k away. It is a fortified ancient city and called Fatehpur Sikri and got a old local bus out to the area. We had no idea what to expect but we were greeted by a old fort perched up on a hill overlooking the city. It is still used today as a mosch so not too sure why it is said to be abandoned with a lot of activity still going on. We spent a few hours walking around the place and headed back into Agra on a bus we just waved down to the delight
of the passengers to see us two getting on. We had planned to try and the sunset over the Taj but getting back in Agra through traffic was difficult and as we are more realizing never get your hopes up in India! You will soon be shot back down.. With the fog and low sun we could not see too much of the taj when finally in the city but we had a nice meal to finish the day off.
The next day was Taj day and we were up very early to see if we could see the sunrise but greeted by fog so back to bed for a few more hours until it started to lift. Had some brekki and we headed on our way, lucky for us that the sun had decided for once to come out and turned out to be a perfect afternoon to be spending in the Taj grounds. Absolutely fantastic to be back there again for me and for Diana for the first time she just loved the building as well. It still surprised us how big it actually is and all the little detail that went into constructing the building. Diana
was also a tourist attraction herself as she was asked for photo after photo also said she looks like Shakira! People were all over the place of course so we were taking plenty of pictures of people also since for India people going to the Taj is a massive event and get all dressed up, looking really nice. The Taj really is a spectacular building!
After leaving the Taj we spend the rest of the day trying to work out how we were going to be getting out of Agra, once we thought it would be that night but only one train ticket available, next morning but full all trains and we finally worked out that we can get a train the next night at 10pm to Allahabad so we took that.
Since we were not leaving until the next night we had another full day so we decided to organize more trains in advance and our host in Delhi was a gem and booked for us! She has been soo much help for us and we are very grateful. We also went to the Red Fort and had a look at the outside of the building but
the monkeys there were putting on a great show for everyone, we spent more time looking at them rather than anything else. A massive dinner again, we headed to the train station to catch our train and with luck it was only 2 hours late but by the time we got to Allahabad it ended up 8 hours late, fun times in a sleeper train!
