Lighthouses

January 13, 2010, Wednesday We drove from O’Leno SP to Anastasia SP in St. Augustine. Anastasia SP is an island located close to the historic St. Augustine and is a coveted spot for RV’ers. The park boasts a broad beach and lagoon. The ancient oaks were young when Juan Ponce De Leon landed in the area in 1513 and gave Florida its name.
This is a great campground for bikers. Since we arrive after 2 PM we decided to walk and use the bridge to get down to the ocean. Finally sunshine and just about 60 degrees…white caps and seagulls! The cold snap is ending. We enjoyed a nice walk on the beach.
January 14, 2010, Thursday Well we got the bikes cleaned up and ready to go. St. Augustine Lighthouse is about 3 miles from our campsite. We walked the 219 steps to the top and were rewarded with a lovely view of Anastasia Island and St. Augustine. We toured the light-keeper’s cottage and learned about the history.
Back on the bikes we cycled across the bridge to the old historic St. Augustine. Walking down St. George Street, we headed to Flagler College. We enjoyed a lunch at Big Shot’s, then took the tour of Flagler College. Henry Flagler became a very wealthy entrepreneur and he built this very elaborate structure as a hotel in 1888. It was only for the very, very wealthy, but as time went on… instead of demolishing it, it became a college. The college still has the elaborate niceties, including Tiffany Glass, elaborate sculptures and paintings, etc. etc. Quite a strange place for undergraduates!?
