Set our alarms so Ellie could be out by 9am to collect her bag from her friend Tim. He owns a fabulous resort in Ko Samui and we'd thought it would be safer getting it delivered there rather than our Guesthouse, but over the last few days we've got to know the family here at Beach Bungalows and they're such nice people. They're so kind to their pets (they even own the dog that layed an egg) and all of them have been so helpful.
While Ellie was at Tim's, I took a walk around Lamai and visited a shop that sold wonderful carved vases, picture frames, Buddha's etc. I'd love to kit my flat out in Teak wooden furnature; low cusions and silk tapestry, but apparently it's really expensive to send things home. It is also illegal to export valuable antiques and Buddha statues without a licence, as Thai people don't want Buddha images to be used for non-religious purposes such as lampstands. They believe this demeans the Buddha.
Ellie arrived home, backpack proudly on display after 10 days without it. Had fruit salad for breakfast with the Dutch guy. He'd bought a ticket to Ko Phangan, but seemed like
he was going to change his journey when we said we were off to Krabi. I panicked and persuaded him to stick to his original plan. He's a lovely guy but talks too much... even more than Ellie and I!
Ellie's backpack was too heavy so she offloaded lots of her clothes and gave them to the girls of the family we'd been staying with. They were made up.
Walked to a Tourist Information centre and arranged our Ferry and bus journey (from the Gulf Coast to Andaman Coast) to Krabi on the opposit side of South Thailand. This cost us only 320baht each (roughly 6.40). We flagged a taxi to the port, both of us had butterflies and loved the feeling of starting our next adventure. Even the thought of a 7 hour journey didn't come close to casting a shadow over our excitement.
Had a gorgeous mixed berry and yogurt smoothy and chatted to two guys from Israel. They got us involved in some brainteaser games - metal shapes that you had to separate. In the queue to the ferry we spotted a familier face - it was the guy we'd talked to at Manchester airport about the
Full Moon party. We told him we'd nearly missed our flight coz we'd been talking to him ;-)
The Israelies left us with their iPod and speakers and we played Roots Manouver "Witness the Fitness" and thought of our friends back home. They had a selection of music on their iPod, even a song by 'Skazi and Z-man' which made us think of Skaz and Zinge. After 20 minutes both Elllie and I felt really seasick, which was strange since neither of us get travel sick and we hadn't felt that way during our previous ferry journeys. Fortunately we made it to land and were hungry for one of their ham and cheese sandwiches and some crisps. Our "bus" arrived (we'd been preparing ourselves for the worst after paying only 320baht) but it was a pink, air-conditioned double decker coach with reclining leather seats. We couldn't have wished for better!
Taxi & Hotel touts were waiting at Krabi bus station, ready to rip off backpackers in need of a rest, but we'd done our research and knew they were sending people to the wrong area. We crossed the highway, agreed a cheap rate with our own taxi and pulled up
in Ao Nang (a touristy area with plenty of restaurants, bars and Guesthouses) 15 minutes later. The first place we tried wanted 700THB per room, but we felt we could find a better deal so moved on. The second place was only 400THB between us (about 4quid each). It was a massive room with a double bed and sofa; an en suit and a terrace area. Brilliant! We paid for 2 nights.
Went out to dinner - found a place with lots of tall plants; hanging baskets and fake birds; and the furnature was made out of rough carved wood so it looked like a jungle. We both had Thai Yellow curry with peanuts, potatoes and plenty of fresh vegetables. Feeling very full, we headed home and fell asleep by 11pm.
