Day 9
Today we met at the tour company at 6:50 A.M. to begin our penguin excursion trip. I made sure to take motion sickness pills prior to leaving the hotel. We will be travelling on a bus as well as a boat. The bus took us 30 minutes to a small boat ramp. There were approximately 30 people packed like sardines onto a small boat with a friendly crew. The conditions on the water were very choppy and I am thankful for remembering to take the motion sickness pills.
On the way to the island the boat begins to lull me to sleep. I leaned back on Warren and rested my head on his arm. He makes a comfortable pillow and I doze off. I awake to Warren laughing as well as the couple across the isle laughing. I oped my eyes to discover that the young guy next to me is also dozing off but is gradually leaning in my direction. Everytime he is about to fall on me, he momentarily wakes up and stops himself. It is comical to watch him readjust evertime. I did not have the heart to wake him to tell
Amber
Amber looking cute (and cold!) with the 200,000 penguins on this island. Crazy him that he actually was leaning on my hip with his elbow.
At the island of penguins we are the first people to get off the boat. It is a good 10-15 degrees cooler on the island and very windy. We have dressed in layers but it is not enough. Our fingers and toes begin going numb as we navigate the roped path. The penguins are very cute and are about 18 inches tall. The females have given birth recently and the babies still have their grey feathers. The adult penguins look very formal in their black and white tuxedos.
The penguins are very brave and allow people to approach them quite closely. The roped path leads to the top of the island where there is a building with a small museum dedicated to the penguins. We begin feeling frozen and decided to head back to the boat.
At the boat we are greeted with hot coffee and cookies to snack on. When everyone is aboard the boat takes us to another nearby island to view the sea lions. We view the sea lions from the boat and then make our way back to
Mother and baby
The baby penguins are so fuzzy looking the boat dock. The bus is awaiting our arrival and takes us back to the tour office.
Back at the hotel, we eat some lunch and receive a message that the other pilot, Brian, will be arriving shortly. When Brian arrives we have a welcome drink at the hotel bar. Brian asks us what there is to do around the hotel. We showed Brian around the center square with the local merchants.
For dinner we decided to take Brian back to La Luna because the food is not to be missed. At dinner we received a phone call from Trevor, Warren's brother. Trevor and Jenny are to be married in a half hour. We are stunned but excited. We are going to try to arrange to be present at the wedding via Skype and it works. At the hotel we laid on the bed with the laptop and attended their wedding. They positioned the camera perfectly for us to see them and most of the guests in their backyard. We could even see Oreo and Riley, their dogs. The ceremony was short and very sweet. Warren's mom, sister, and grandpa even sang a song. We videoed
Wow
200,000 penguins the computer screen so we would have a memory of the wedding. It actually came out pretty well.
We celebrated with a bottle of wine and began preparing for our departure the next day. We are to depart for Buenos Aires
