HO HO HO Merry Christmas from China!!
It’s Christmas Day and I’m sitting on a beach under a palm tree. Jodie and I arrived on Langtau Island yesterday, which is one of the Hong Kong islands. It’s about 25 degrees today so I think it’s fair to say it’s the hottest Christmas I have ever experienced. Every one is walking about in shorts and t-shirts, it’s so surreal. I am also surrounded by mountains and there are lots of scary cows wandering about the streets. Just now there is a little Chinese man walking across the beach with a sack of crabs. He looks a bit like Santa, except he has crabs instead of coal and a dog instead of a reindeer. I’m having one of my Chinese moments where I just sit, look around and think ‘what on earth is going on?!’
I am living in an apartment with people from Jodie’s University. There are students from: Finland, France, America, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan. Oh, and of course Jodie and I representing Scotland and England. We rented out the apartment to celebrate Christmas Eve but a few of us are staying on today to celebrate
the REAL Christmas. I’m sure I have already explained that some European countries have their main celebration on Christmas Eve. I didn’t know any thing different until I arrived in Hong Kong and heard about the plans for Christmas. It was really interesting to hear how every one celebrates Christmas. The only thing we had in common was that it involves alcohol!
Every one is really friendly and we had a great (fake) Christmas dinner last night. We all prepared some thing from our home country so we got to sample lots of different foods and drinks. We also ordered a turkey, ham and a Christmas log from the international supermarket. Jodie and I cooked sausages wrapped in bacon and brought along a few bottles of Bucks Fizz for breakfast this morning. Classy! haha. Our apartment is decorated with tinsel and we even have a Christmas tree with tacky lights! We all brought a present for under the tree and did a secret Santa type thing. The Chinese neighbours keep on staring in our patio windows; they must wonder what is going on!
It’s Jodie’s birthday today so we are having a birthday meal. We are also going
to watch some Christmas movies. (Sofia - when I watch Elf I will think of you! I promise we will have an extra special Buddy the Elf day since we did not get to watch it before I left).
Any way …… I hope that you are all having a lovely Christmas back home. I’ve heard that there is lots of snow! Safe snowballing :-)
