Day 11: Monday, December 7th, 2009
Paris, France to Lucerne, Switzerland

Editors note: This has been a whirlwind tour so I am now writing the blogs from December 7th -17th today, December 18th, as we drive from Munich to Vienna. Needles to say, I'm sure there are many things I've forgotten. Oh well.

This was a loooong driving day. The country side was pretty so that helped, but the only thing to note is that I had my first encounter with a french toilet. It's the moment you all have been waiting for. What will Amanda say about the toilets in Europe? Will she take pictures? Will there be stories? Will she leave our phone numbers scribbled on stalls and we'll get annoying and expensive phone calls in the middle of the night? The answers, so far, are: Yes, yes and yes! Well, okay, I haven't scribbled any numbers yet, that thought just occurred to me but is amusing me enough that I might still do that.

So I asked, delicately I'm sure, why the hell there aren't toilet seats on public toilets in France (and, actually, much of Europe). The answer I was given was because it was more hygienic to not have seats. Yes, I can see how women hovering over a toilet bowl and splattering everywhere is more hygienic than when we actually sit. The floors are covered, the rim around the bowl is covered, and my thighs are now muscle on top of muscle from this hovering technique that the women of Europe seem to be happy to do. Ri-friggin-diculous. I need a show of hands on this- how many of you (men and women) have contracted something from sitting on a toilet seat? I'm assuming no hands are raised (and if you did raise your hand I don't wanna know about it.) I enjoy Zappa's lyrics, "Why does it burn when I pee...I got it from the toilet seat... it jumped right up and grabbed my meat" but I don't believe in the lyrics. I want my toilet seats!!! A nice little tip for all you future European travelers, though, use the handicap stalls. Those lucky people (yes, I shake my head too when I type that) get toilet seats. And the good parking spots. Right now, I am envious of the wheelchair bound.

We get to our hotel (Hotel Landhaus) in Lucerne but it's dark already so we can't really see much. The hotel is nice and the rooms are clean, so who could ask for anything more (Toyota?) Dinner is included (spaghetti) and after dinner the rest of the gang play cards and I go anti-social and head up to my room to edit pictures. Tomorrow is a full day in Lucerne.
