Hanging Lake
Sarah and I hiked to this lovely spot for lunch A lifetime ago, it now seems, I started this blog with a trip to Denver.
And now I'm writing from there yet again! Just for fun, I decided to re-read the old blogs. It's been said that travel changes a person, and of course, I spot small changes both in my writing style and my attitude towards things. Ah, I was naive, eh? And I suppose I will look back on these most recent travels in a few years and think the same thing.
But I digress. Onto the Denver adventures! The first time I was in Denver to visit Sarah, we aimed to see Garden of the Gods and Pike's Peak. We didn't do that this time either, but saw many a splendid site instead, with no snow to spoil our plans. I landed in Denver at 9pm on a Friday, after flights from Sydney to Auckland, to San Francisco, to Denver. I am really starting to believe I should plant a rain forest to make up for all this airplane travel!
What better way to beat jet-lag than a hike in the mountains? Sarah was a bit worried about her fitness level, but it soon became
Pretty waterfall
On the way to Hanging Lake clear that the altitude was enough to give her the advantage on the hike! I hadn't been at altitudes that high in quite some time, and found myself gasping for air after just a couple of minutes on our first hike. I wonder if the "Rocky Mountain high" is from the lack of oxygen in the thin air!
We hiked up to Hanging Lake, a beautiful blue-green lake with waterfalls, and a fallen log for the adventurous kids who use it to walk out to the middle of the lake. We had a lovely lunch and explored around the falls, then to Glenwood Springs to soak in the hot waters. Before we knew it, they were packing up the chairs at the hot springs and we realized we needed to get dinner before the kitchens closed! Having the sun set so late really gives you an odd sense of time!
The next day, we had a bit of a sleep-in, then set out to enjoy the lovely weather. We set off for a horse-back ride near Rocky Mountain National Park. I hadn't ridden a horse before, so I was super nervous. But my horse Mavrick was a gentle
Rocky view
A view along the hike fellow who seemed to understand I had no idea what to do, and he tried to keep Sarah's horse in order, as it turned out hers was more interested in munching the grass than following the lead horse. It was only halfway into the ride that I finally stopped being nervous, once I had remembered that I had ridden a camel before, so a horse was easy in comparison!
After an hour, my legs were happy to reach the ground again, so we said goodbye to our noble steeds and we set off into the park to hike. We chose the hike to Alberta Falls. Anyone who complains about the crowds in the Canadian Rockies needs to see Rocky Mountain National Park before they complain again! But despite the people, we enjoyed the hike and the beautiful scenery.
Then it was off to Boulder to meet up with Jamie for some Ethiopian food! Yum! It was fun to catch up with a fellow Montrealer and the food was delicious. The next day few days, I lounged around Sarah's home while she was at work, catching up on emails and sorting photos, going to the bank and cooking food.
Cheeky chipmunk!
He tried to steal our lunch! Nothing super exciting, but after being nomad for a while, the "normal" things like using the internet are appreciated! The heat also got to me, as it was the start of a heat wave. It's getting to be an annoyance, this traveling between seasons!
Soon enough though, my trip was over and I was boarding the next plane. Another story closed!
