DAY 248

Today seems to be all about washing up, the day started off that way and it seemed to set a theme for the day.

Not having a significant plan to get up for in the mornings does have a habit of making you feel lazy, but it is great! So another easy start to the day I knock up a bacon sandwich for breakfast as a treat. But before that I have to wash the dishes from last night, because I need the plates and last night I could not be bothered to wash up, so before the bacon sandwich can materialise I wash up!

While we eat our breakfast a White Ibis wanders up and seeing the bowl of washing up water (I left it so that I could wash the breakfast things), in he went with his long beak, Andy startled it, the beak came out and off he ran, I could see his long beak was dripping with the bubbles from the washing up water. The Ibis do not seem perturbed by this, I am sure that the soapy water cannot taste very nice, but time and time again they seem to

This Dog was fast asleep in the shade on the back of a Ute
make a b-line for it. They are so inquisitive and always try to get their beaks into anything that we have lying around camp.

This morning is quite important, after our draw at mini golf last week we have planned a rematch. So now we are ready for the day, breakfasted and showered we set off into Darwin central for the golf course.

The roads are quiet on this Sunday morning, but at the golf course every man, woman and dog seems to be here playing golf (big golf that is!) there is not a single person on the mini golf so we have the whole course to ourselves, great plenty of time to concentrate on the game with no pressure from people behind you.

We are on the course, I had already won the coin flip on the way down, so I said Andy could go first, the heat was on, not just because of the pressure involved in our re match but the heat was literally on, it was turning into a hot day and although we had shade over most of the course some parts were exposed to the blazing sunshine.

The game

The Old Quantas Hanger
started fairly well for the both of us, with an on par score of 2, however things go from good to worse on the 4th hole when it took me 5 shots to get the ball into the hole. Andy was not much better but at that point it meant we were even again, things improved again for the next few holes but on hole 9 I really screwed up with a full 6 shots compared to Andy’s 3, that put me behind by 1 point and then onto the second 9.

A steady run followed but early in the second 9 Andys lapse in concentration allowed me to pull forward and then we jockeyed for position, I had a feeling that I was not going to win this game as the last few holes Andy scored a hole in 1 compared with my 4 shots, I was back in with a chance on the 18th, Andy had 7 tries and I downed the ball in 2.

We cannot wait to total the scores, so we stand to one side only to find that once again we drew! We are both gob smacked by this and cannot believe that for the second time on this course we actually drew! So of course we need another game to decide a winner, we will have another match later in the week.

Still there is time for a card game tonight, so the competition is not over yet!!

This mini golf course is the best one that we have come across in Australia so far, although this one is also not well maintained it is in fairly good condition and you do stand a fair chance of getting the ball in the hole.

We happened to be driving through Parap, a nice little suburb of Darwin when we came across a signpost for the Qantas Hanger, this rang a bell, someone had told us that we should visit, so we turned and soon we were parking up outside a fairly large hangar that said “Qantas Empire Airways Ltd” when in fact it actually belonged to the Northern Territory Motor Enthusiasts Club and this hanger was full of old cars, trucks, motorbikes, tools, you name it anything to do with motoring it was there including a rather tasty 1932 Jensen Interceptor.

We see some of the enthusiasts working on various vehicles, including an old mini moke that looked as if it was never going to start again. There were various vehicle chassis outside rusting but in some way being loved by the enthusiasts that donate their time and probably money in order to keep this history alive.

We spent some time looking around the hangar, it was exceptionally interesting, if you like that kind of thing, which we both do enjoy. The entry is free but they do ask for a gold coin donation. Good value for money, depending on how much you put in the donation box.

Back at camp we had some lunch and then we spent the afternoon relaxing again, I stuck my head in the newspaper and did the crossword, then a little later on we decided to go for a swim, the poolside had plenty of people sat on the edge, we went straight for the water, the pool was fairly empty apart from a few kids, Andy dived in first, I have to say it looks cold judging by the looks on peoples faces, so I got in ankle deep to start with, my word I was right it is

This Silver Ghost had recaro seats in it, the owners should have been sent to the tower for that
pretty cold today, the temperature has dropped significantly in the last few days, but decide that the only way to do this was to get in.

I think I must be getting used to cold water as it was fairly easy to slip into it, I swam to keep warm, but I think we were only in for about 5 minutes before succumbing to the cold and having to get out. Usually when you get out of the pool it feels cold until you dry off, however getting out you could feel the heat of the day, it was more humid than anything else, it was quite overcast

We had an early tea of bangers and mash with onion gravy, Mum and Dad Skyped while I was cooking dinner, so I could not chat properly.

After dinner we had a long evening ahead of us, it was still warm but I lit the mortein candle to set up the mozzie 5 metre exclusion zone, I don’t think it worked very well as we were both bitten, the mozzies seem to ignore the rules of the game.

We do the dishes, there seems to be rather a lot, Andy washes and I wipe. After a short while Andy vanishes and when he reappears he looks as if he is going to sit down to relax, I question his motives “Have you finished the washing up?” “Yes,” he replied, just as I pointed out the saucepans that I had used to cook the dinner, “Ooops,” with that Andy stood up and finished the washing up properly.

We play cards, picking up the game from where we left off a couple of nights ago, Andy was seriously giving me a hammering, I then won a few games, well tonight I did good, we played hard we both put up a good fight but in the end Andy succumbed to his injuries and lost hands down.

We had an early night, it was dark, we had finished playing cards and there was nothing else to do, we were both tired, I know why so tired when you have not been doing anything?

It was too hot to sleep under the bed clothes we lay on top longing for a cool breeze, Andy fell asleep fairly quickly but I lay awake for a while listening to the sounds

The gorgeous old traction engine stood quiet
of the wildlife outside.

I hear a screech and a squeal, the crashing of leaves and then a thud. Oh dear it sounds like a possum has fallen from the tree, or was he pushed?
