Everyone slept wonderfully last night and we all awoke this morning to a cloudy and brisk Rhode Island day. I was very shocked to see that the outdoor thermometer read 59 degrees. No wonder Jon said his toes were about to freeze off ! This was definitely an oatmeal morning so, as soon as we were all finished getting ready (without incident I might add), Tim and I sat at the kitchen table and enjoyed our oatmeal while Jon decided he would stick with a bowl of Cheerios. Our first adventure today would take us up the road to Newport, Rhode Island. A few of our friends had told us to stop by there and check it out plus there were a couple of things in the book that I just had to get marked off my list. It began to drizzle a little on our trip over but we didn’t mind, Tim just kept on driving and we just kept on riding. It wasn’t long before we came to a bridge that crossed the Narragansett Bay and off to the right was a small 18-acre island where The Rose Island Lighthouse stood. I like lighthouses so Tim tried his best to slow down enough so that Jon and I could get some pictures but I’m not really sure how well they will turn out. Once we crossed the bridge, the road led us straight into downtown Newport. It looks exactly what you think it would look like. All types of nautical themed stores, boats everywhere, and really cute little cape cod looking buildings. As we were headed out of town we came across the International Tennis Hall of Fame. It’s in the book so we had to at least go by it, but I have to say that I’m not sure if it was just too early in the morning or what but none of the three of us were jumping out of our seats to go in and check it out. Now I don’t have anything against the sport of tennis but it just didn’t sound like something I wanted to spend my time or money on and I sure as heck wasn’t going to get out in the rain to see it. I’m sure Arthur Ashe will forgive me someday. Anyway, we took a quick picture of the building and then headed on over to explore The Newport Mansions. We just had to see what the wealthy and socially prominent called home. Tim strategically drove us down Bellevue Drive so we could sneak a peek at how the Vanderbuilt’s and the Astor’s live life. Wellllll, let’s just say that my entire family, your entire family and your friends entire family could live in some of these homes. They are magnificent and you can own one at a starting price of somewhere around 7 million dollars. Hummmm, wonder what the mortgage would be on that ???? On the other hand, does it really matter, I think not seeing how I couldn’t even afford the electric bill on a house that size. Oh well, we can all dream ! It was around 11:00 am by now and the thermometer had only risen to a very cool 67 degrees. Little did we know that this would be the high for the day. Of course, Tim just loves this kind of cool weather so he was a very happy boy today. It was time to head on up the road to Cape Cod and see what all the fuss is about over there. On the drive over, we notice that there were so many people walking, jogging and riding their bikes everywhere. We thought that was pretty cool and if nothing else it helps to cut down on the traffic for the tourist like us. It was time to stop and fill up the tank and while Tim was pumping gas he asked a local guy riding by to recommend a great place for lunch. The gentleman suggested that we try this place about 5 miles down the road called Moby Dick’s. Yes, it’s a seafood joint but the guy said they had hamburgers too, so we made our way on over to check it out. I’m so glad we did because Jon and I each feasted on a succulent 2 lb. lobster and corn on the cob. It was deeeeellishhhh !! Do I even need to say what Tim ordered ??? No, cause you know it was a hamburger, well actually it was a bacon cheeseburger and he said it was really good too. Me and Jon tried our best to get Tim to try a tiny little piece of lobster but he just wouldn’t do it. One of my goals on this trip is to get him to eat a piece of seafood. He owes me anyway because one time when we were at this really fancy restaurant, he talked me into tasting escargot for him and he still owes me big time for that ! Moby Dick’s was a really cool place, the service was good and the food was even better. We shopped around in the gift store for a few minutes and then we headed on over to the Cape Cod National Seashore. It’s about a 40 mile stretch of rolling dunes and absolutely gorgeous beaches. We went all the way to Provincetown which is the very northern tip end of Cape Cod. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to be able to add to my list of things I’ve done in my life. Seriously, how many people do you know that have driven a motor home from Atlanta all the way to the tip end of Cape Cod ? I was actually kinda excited. We parked the RV across from the beach and then made our way down to the shore. It was really neat, there were people there with their dogs running the beaches and then there was this guy fishing right from the shoreline. Oh yea, there was this person, with a hoodie over their head, sitting Indian style up on the hill just staring out into the water. It was kind of weird but calming all rolled up into one. The three of us strolled along the beach together all the while Jon and I were taking like a million pictures. It was just so serene and beautiful and there were tons of photo ops all around us. As we were walking, we look out into the ocean and all of a sudden we see these two little heads bobbing up and down. Tim thought it was someone drowning, Jon thought it was a dog and I was too busy trying to get a picture to think about it at all. After reviewing the photos when we left we realized it was a pair of sea lions or seals or some kind of animal like that. I’ll be sure to post a picture so you can help us identify the sea creatures. We stayed there for a while but it started getting colder and colder so we finally called it a day and made our way back to the RV so we could head on over towards Boston. On our way to Boston, we made a pit stop in Plymouth, MA so that we could see Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II. Eventually we found somewhere to park our house and we followed the signs over to Plymouth Rock. Well, that’s exactly what it is, a big rock ! We took a couple of pictures, read the informational kiosk and then went over to check out the replica of the Mayflower II. It was cool to see but you couldn’t go on it or touch it or anything however, they did have another ship there called the Peacemaker and we did get to go on board and take a tour of it. That was fun and stuff but it was getting really dark and sprinkling and stuff and we were ready to find somewhere to settle in for the night. We ran across the street to the gift shop and bought a few things and then got back on the road headed towards Boston. We had thought we would be in Boston a lot earlier than this but it’s no big deal, we’ve still got a few more days before we have to be in Portland to pick up the rest of the gang (smiling) so we just took our time today and enjoyed ourselves and our time with Jonathan. Tim drove us up Highway 3 to a small town called Weymouth, MA just a few miles from downtown Boston. He drove us through KFC to get some chicken for dinner and then he found us a Wal-Mart parking lot, so we hunkered down and settled in for the night. He’s sweet like that you know, feeding us and finding us a safe place to sleep and all. We enjoyed our dinner together and watched part of Saving Private Ryan and then headed off to bed. I can’t wait to explore Boston tomorrow !! Good Night and God Bless !
