Grand palace attempt 1- The appointment of the Deputy Prime Minister & Public Health Minister meant the Palace was genuinely closed in the morning & not just closed because some tuk-tuk driver is after a quick buck.

We walked through the outskirts of Chinatown down cloth-sellers' street, Buddha-sellers' street and the dual purpose guitar & typewriter shopping street (correlation? adept with hands..no real idea). I have no idea how one can select which retailer to go to- I must point out, that all wares seemed identical.

On our return, we detoured past the giant swing- doesn't every capital need one? Apparently it was used by the Emperor for specific ceremonies. We also past the impressive democracy monument- surrounded by several lanes of honking traffic acting rather undemocratically really.

Dinner was at the fabulous Tuptims which became a fav due to its divine chocolate brownie with ice cream- the only establishment, in fact, with decent desserts (it also has good mains- but that is beside the point).

We walked down Khao San Road later on. This became rather a ritual because there always seems to be so much going on, and it is always intriguing to discover how many tuktuk drivers will ask if you want to go to a "ping pong" show (slightly disturbingly- I won this competition over Luke hands down). Anyway, tonight was no exception as the locals were out in force in some fantastic Halloween costumes and face paint. My particular fav was a Thai girl dressed as a skeleton bride with exceptional body paint (blue with black skeleton- brilliant). There was also the semi-permanent stage show- this time with Halloween giveaways and local bands, and of course, there were vendors selling treats, glow-in-the-dark things and guys who would create fake wounds, should you want to create an elaborate backpacker's tale.
