Counting Crows
Yes we made it! Well i’ll bet you’re all dying to know if we made the concert or not....? Well maybe not, but anyway we made it! It was pretty good, but according to Vince it wasn’t their best. After the concert we headed off to Mitcham - south side of London, so we could beat peak hour Friday morning traffic on the drive to Dover.
We arrived at Dover and caught the ferry across to Calais. It was a smooth journey and then came the not so smooth journey - driving on the WRONG side of the road - well right side (which is wrong!) . Once again we needed bloody fuel. So after plugging in more service stations into the GPS and not being able to find a servo we were in another stressful situation! Luckily enough we found diesel all be it a rip off at 106.9 in France (it was 86.9 over the border in Belgium)!! We then continued to Bruge and made it there by late afternoon to an awesome free camp! Right next to a camping ground, so you know what that meant.....using their showers and toilets for free woo hoo!!
Day 1 in Bruge - the
Free camp
Our free roadside camp in Bruge - right next to the camp ground :) weather was a nightmare, rain, sun, rain, sun, rain, rain, thunder, you get the picture. Anyway we saw all the sights, the Holy Basilica, Markt, Burg, Michaelangelo’s Madonna and Child marble carving and we took in some of the cute touristy shops. We had a nice evening rest and then got ready for our night out in Bruge. Hot tip - Bruge has no nightlife so don’t expect a big party. So we found a little pub that had plenty of Belgian beers. Got stuck into the 8, 9 and 10% beers. Needless to say after 4 pints we were pissed! We didn’t even realise it until we stood up, they don’t seem strong but they really do hit you like a bus.
Day 2 in Bruge - we both woke up with nasty little headaches, feeling seedy, dusty and dry in desperate need of showers! We had a restful morning to try and sleep off the beers and by lunch time we headed back into the city. We climbed Belfry tower (and yes it was a big climb, 366 tiny winding stairs - as the guy says in the movie “In Bruge” you really wouldn’t want to be
fat trying to get up there, you would get seriously wedged)! So once at the top we took in the view of Bruge - lucky for us it wasn’t raining so we got to see the city. After the tower we had traditional Belgian chips and mayo! Don’t make the mistake of asking for French fries (as so many idiot tourists did) the food sellers get really pissed off.
Then we were off to cruise the canals. It was very pretty floating along under the lovely old bridges and learning about the beautiful old buildings. If you’ve already done the city as we basically had its not really worth the money, but it is nice just to cruise. After the sightseeing we had more food to sample! We went to the beautiful Belgian chocolatier and bought a box of gorgeous truffles and hand made chocolates. We also bought a mouth watering Belgian waffle with cream, chocolate and banana YUM!
After we were done exploring we moved Jonesy into the campsite. Unfortunately we had to charge everything up so it had to be done. It was lovely having a shower not feeling like we were stealing the water he
The beer wall!
Over 400 beers, hmm which one to choose? he!
So all in all Bruge is a lovely little city. Its definitely set up for bikes and we are loving riding around everywhere. It really is a great way to get around and save money on buses etc. Would definitely recommend a visit to Bruge.
Just a heads up on where we’re off to for the next episode! We’ve decided to skip Brussels (as nothing much is there, and bloody nothing is open on Mondays in Brussels anyway, and everyone has said its a waste of time!). So we’re taking a scenic trip up to Den Haag and then catching the Keukenhof flower show on Thursday, then off to Amsterdam for some partying over the long weekend, can’t wait to see Hayley and Nov!
