Erika and her Mermaid
Erika picked out this great mermaid kite at the kite store and she had a blast flying for the first time and the winds were perfect for a beginner! Now is what I call the perfect vacation day... we slept in until our bodies were ready to wake up, at least mine was. Our only desire was to do some exploring in the local area and take the girls to see the ocean. It was raining in the Windsor area but it seemed to be off and on and everyone knows it's always rainy at the coast. I fueled up at the gas station and asked a local where was the best place to take kids to the beach and pointed us in the direction of Bodega Bay.
We wandered down the twisty little state highway 12 through Sebastapol until we ended up at the ocean in Bodega Bay. The sky was still scattered with clouds but the rain was holding out on this side of the hills. I made the remark this morning that this would have been the perfect opportunity to go fly kites and have a picnic on the beach but I hadn't had the foresight to make the correct purchases. I passed by the first beach entrance and continued through town in hopes of finding a place that would put us right on a sandy
Jose and the Kite
Jose had to try his hand at the kite flying too since Erika got tired of holding it after awhile. He left ALL the line out and the mermaid was just a speck in the sky! beach. I was thinking this would be Mia's first trip to the ocean but I guess she did see it in San Diego on our way home from Mexico last year. She probably doesn't remember it since she was lying on a blanket and at least this time she was able to run around.
As we were driving through town, there at the top of a hill was a kite store, Kite and Candy!! Talk about kismet. We whipped right into the driveway and Erika got to pick between a mermaid or a fairy kite and the mermaid won. There were big barrels full of salt water taffy so we filled up a baggie with lots of different flavors. This is the first place that I've seen offer pomegrante flavor, yum. We picked up a net bag full of sand todays and got the owners recommendations on the best beach to go to as well as the best eats in town. He directed us back to the beach that we had passed on the way into town and the restaurant right across the driveway. First stop was to head back to the beach and get in our play time
Building Sand castles
Mommy and Mia playing in the sand with buckets and shovels, oh my! before filling up our tummies.
The conditions at the beach were perfect for beginner kite flying. All I had to to was unfold the kite and insert the cross piece, wind out some line, and away she went without any running on our part. Erika was able to grab the handle and go without any help from Mom so she was feeling pretty proud of herself. I never had this good of wind when I went flying before. We all took our turn at flying and it was fun. Sometimes you just have to slow down and do the simple things of childhood so you can relax and remember how much fun it was.
