After a week in the city I wanted to escape for a little retreat as they say and see some new sights.

After hearing about a one hour ferry trip from the port of Buenos Aires to Colonia, it sounded ideal. I booked a night in a hostel and hopped on a ferry on the Tuesday morning.

As we pulled up to the harbour I knew I was in for a treat as I could already see Palm Trees! Yes, the water was a little on the muddy side, but apparently it´s due to sediment and is perfectly clean. I hope so because I enjoyed a little dip and the water was definitely a lot warmed than Southend on Sea.

I soon found my hostel located in a beautiful cobbled street. In fact the whole place is lined with cobbled streets, trees and lovely little houses. I found somewhere to grab a spot to eat over looking the Rio de la Plata (an estuary between Uraguay and Argentina) and then spent a few hours exploring. It´s so peaceful, everyone drives around on mopeds and golf buggies and there seems to be a much much slower pace to life here than in Buenos Aires.

I spent the evening walking around the old town with a few room mates and then sipping red wine from a local vineyard on the terrace and telling bad jokes.

It´s a perfect location for a weekend getaway and has given me a taster of Uruguay. I may just have to come back.....
