Buenos Aires, the first time
So finally arrived in BA, the first day spent around the hostel in San Telmo. It was a Sunday and there was a large, famous street market where you can buy a whole variety of things from t shirts to antiques, it made a fascinating couple of hours. Surprisingly though I was still quite wiped from the travel so it was a fairly quite evening around the hostel.
Next morning headed out early for the airport to meet my friend Simon, all went according to plan, and soon we were back at the hostel. Turned out he was lucky to have arrived as he had missed the snow dump over London by only hours!
We kicked off the afternoon with an Argentine treat lunch at a local restaurant, a huge steak and a bottle of delicious red wine, and all for 20 pounds! yeeeah 😊
We walked lunch off exploring more of the city, Buenos Aires really is a beautiful, its wide avenues and grand buildings gives it a very European feel. After a full afternoon of walking around we headed back to the hostel for a quiet evening and early night.... well that was the
plan at least!
The next day we spent another day walking around the city. This time lunch was in a pizza bar, a Bs As institution since 1934, the walls covered with sport history in posters. We started the afternoon in Recoleta cemetery, fascinating if a little macabre. We then emerged in Palmero, a leafy, more upmarket area of Bs As. We walked till our feet could do no more, and after a welcome pit-stop on a terrace we returned to our hostel.
The evening we joined some new friends from the hostel for dinner. The menu was simple, for 50pesos you got a bottle of wine and all you can eat buffet. The main event was of course the huge meat grill. Manned by a machete wielding guys who hacked off huge chunks of juicy meat to cover your plate (before adding a few nominal leafs of lettuce). It was a carnivores heaven... we rolled out with huge grins on our stuffed faces....
The next day was spent shopping and a few other chores before heading out on an over night bus down to Bariloche in the Lakes district of Patagonia....
