NEW YORK
Ok, ok. So it's been a while since our last post. We travelled light to NY so no internet for a while. Sorry guys. Have a few days up our sleeve now, so will be writing like mad to keep up. Tam will be adding the Niagara falls post asap.
SO! New York. Well what can you say. There, of course was quite a build up of excitement leading up to this leg. NY and all of the sights and sounds, landmarks galore and ground Zero. NY did come through with the goods. This is how it all went down......
Our great friends from the great state of Texas hooked us up with some free accommodation in downtown Manhatten. Maxx was a champion! Nice little place literally 4 mins walk from ground zero. So that was our first stop. We dropped our bags off at Maxx' place and off on a bit of a stroll. First couple hours and we saw Wall St, City Hall, the Court house, Statue Of Liberty ( from afar ) and on our way back, Ground Zero. I wasnt sure how i'd feel coming across the big hole
WTC Fire Hall
All Men were lost at this fire hall. Right next to WTC.
in the ground. Thousands of lost lives and pretty much the biggest ( how do I put this? ) Disaster, Terrorist action, news maker, worst thing, to happen in my lifetime. ( does that make sense?? ) Well everything was fixed up and there was no evidence of anything actually happenning here. It just looked like a massive job site. All the memorials have been taken off the fences, and its just buisiness as usual. We unfortunately did not make it into the memorial museum located in the area. So me experience was kind of empty feeling. Definately didn't have the great harrowing feeling of deathe and anger towards Osama or sadness for the american people. Kind of feel more upset about that, actually. Time to move on.
We went out and tried to find nice (cheap) place to eat some dinner. Burgers and beers it seems....again. But at a nice little sport bar type just off the main drag. Walking around NY at night I thought was going to be a bit scary. But I suppose this was a good neighbourhood, cause all the crims and weirdos were not to bee seen. But I know this sounds
Ground Zero
New constrution of the "Freedom Tower" at Ground Zero bad, but I always kept my eye on all the Black guys. Dodgey. Dinner was good so now its time to hit the town.
We decided to hit Times Square. Cool. All the pretty lights and one of the "big" sights to be seen here. Well iit did have all the bells and whistles but thats it. Take the obligatory photo and move on. Back to Maxx' place for our sleep on the blow up matress and couch for Gavin.
Well we DID plan a big day today. But thanks to mother nature for f**king it all up again. SNOW! and it was hammering down. And windy and cold. Ok, lets bundle up and hit it anyway. we did our best. Chinatown, Little italy and thats about it. We had to get out of the cold by Little Italy and a small pizzeria selling slice of nice authentic NY pizza and beer for $6. Lets go.
Back to the Apt. for warmth and work out what to do next. Snow and cold is really giving us the shits.
Wednesday 4th Feb.
Cheap tickets for the Broadway Musicals for Tamara today. So it's off the Times
Square again to line up at some special boothe for 1/2 price tickets. Lucky it only an 20 min trip on the subway and short walk. Picked up 3 tix for Mary Poppins! Hooray. Tamara was SOOOOOO excited to see her first BROADWAY MUSICAL! I couold not understand what all the fuss was about.....? I was just glad we couldnt get the smile off Tamara's face. A short walk up the road ( after a few stops in Mcdonalds and Othr shops to warm up ) we came across Ed Sullivan Theater! COOL! David Letterman show. We though we'd take our chances on seeing a show. We found out that it was actually a lotterty for the remaining tickets. So on went our names and then we were hoping on a callback later. Cool, now off to Central Park and the Pigeon lady.
Central park was nice. Lots of trees, paths playgrounds and such. 843 acres! Wandering through we stumbled upon a big series of rocks. in full sun they were almost warm. So we downed or packs and layed down for a nice relaxing rest ing the sun. As I lay there I realised just how much nature people
Ed Sullivan Theatre
The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles all played here. We saw the DAVID LETTERMAN show here this night Tam and I are. Our moods changed, we had great conversation, and really enjoyed our time on that big rock. I know it sounds funny, but I'll never forget it. Laying there looking at the sky in amongst the biggest city in the world, and yet feeling so far away from it all. Then the phone rang. WE'RE GOING TO DAVID LETTERMAN! Cool.
I'm sick of typing now. So i'll finish the rest of this trip at a later date. Take it easy gang! The Three amigos Will be back soon!
