Campeche is the first stop on the Yucutan Peninsula part of our trip. It was a 17h bus ride from Mexico City to here, so we were grateful to find that our hostel (the Monkey Hostel) is quite friendly, with a rooftop terrace overlooking the main square and cathedral. The city´s waterfront is a long paved bicycle path, with not much else going on. In the evening at around 5, all the clothing and jewelery shops open near our hostel, and there is a frenzy of shopping and walking around until about 9:30, when things close again. Clothing prices are about the same as they are in Canada, which is disappointing. It is a very strange city. Yesterday we spent a very long time looking for somewhere to buy groceries and/or beer, and found a mall that was entirely closed at 2pm. We finally asked someone about beer, and managed to find a tiny restaurant that also sold beer by the case and litre. When we directed some other travelers there later though, it had closed before 10pm. The next day, we made sure to stock up early! It seems that we have not been eating much except breakfast, coffee and

beer.

On Saturdays, there is always some sort of event in the main square. This Saturday, there were huge tables set up for people to play a game resembling bingo, except that the announcer calls out things like ´2 chickens´, and then there is a flurry of activity as everyone checks their cards. There was also ´live entertainment´, which we were excited about. A bunch of cute little girls in shiny dresses took the stage, and we though it was going to be a charming traditional dance, but they jived their way through a Grease medley, and some hip hop. It was pretty cute, though.

The evening´s entertainment ended with some random people singing, kareoke-like, so we took our beer up to the roof of the hostel and entertained ourselves. Someone set off fireworks across the street, which exploded directly above us. Beautiful but scary!

Today, we tried for the entire morning to rent bikes. We had tried yesterday, too, since it seems like this city which is devoid of any people during the day would be perfect for biking... but apparently every hostel and even the bike rental place either doesn´t have bikes, or they are all out for repair. This was very frustrating. What a weird place.

The day was saved, however, when we met some fun boys from Wisconsin, and drank many beers with them and some other random hostelers on the roof. What better way to spend a Sunday?

Tomorrow, we go to Merida!
