On Saturday, January 3rd, we spent the day wandering around all by ourselves, discovering new markets and plazas with churches. In the evening, Elba´s friend Julia came over and we made ´makis´, which were not just normal sushi. We made the rolls with vegetables and cheese, and with rice covering the outside. THEN, we cut the rolls in half, dipped them in egg and breadcrumbs, and fried them! They were delicious. We also rolled chunks of cheese in egg and breadcrumbs many times, then fried these. This was amazing (although perhaps not an every day food). After dinner, Laura got her hair cut at a local salon while the other girls read Mexican tabloids, which each feature a barely-clad woman on the front and as a centre-fold.
In the evening, Morelia put on a fireworks display to highlight the lighting of the cathedral. As the building was gradually lit with colored lights, epic music played and fireworks covered the sky. (These fireworks were lit from the cathedral square, metres away from the crowd, and occasionally fizzled on top of the cathedral itself. Many pigeons were within an inch of their lives.)
Tuesday the 6th was, as we understood it,
Crepes
Sweet OR savoury - Blair had caramel and nuts, and Laura had mushrooms and cheese. Mmmmm. ´something something something Saint someone day´. It is the funniest holiday - you leave your shoe out the night before, and in the morning there is a present in it! Then in the evening, you eat baby cake. This is a large doughnut-shaped cake resembling Easter bread. Everyone has a turn to cut their piece out, and if your piece contains a white plastic baby, it is good luck! You also have the responsibility of preparing tamales at some later event in February. To add to the festive and perplexing nature of the event, as you cut your cake everyone else chants ´MANO! MANO!´at you, in hopes that you will get the baby. As there were ten-plus adults and at least as many kids, this was loud and fun. Neither Blair nor Laura got a mano.
On Tuesday afternoon, we also took Elba out to lunch for crepes, frappés and beer. Blair and Victor (Elba´s brother) went to the zoo.
Wednesday was our last day in Morelia. Elba had school, so her tattoo-parlour-running friend Leo took us to a pool, with a bunch of his friends. It was a beautiful, surprisingly deserted, and extremely cold pool.
For
our final dinner in Morelia, Elba´s family prepared our favourite meal; TAQUITOS!!! Some of the members of the extended family came to say goodbye, and there was beer and tearful hugs all around.
Thursday, we began our 24-hour journey to Campeche. We arrived safely. We miss Elba´s family!

Jealous
Look at you two having so much fun! I am a bit jealous. I am now going to attempt to forget my jealousy by reading quantum theory while trying not to freeze.
