Dear all,
Its Friday and I am here in Boracay...the most famous white beach of the Philippines. I left my cosy room in Sabang on Monday morning and four days later I got here, with a few adventures along the way!
Our first boat took us back to the mainland and it was an uneventful journey except that we saw dolphins..which is a great bonus. Then we got on our next ferry which would take us to Odiongan and would take ten hours. We quickly found our bunk, there was a bit of confusion as another Filipino man had a ticket with the same bunk on it, but we sorted it in the end. The boat set sail and we sat on our bunks and ate noodle pots...the only food available. Then we settled down for the night, but when you are sharing a room with 180 other people its not so easy!!
We finally got to our Odiongan at 3am. Then we had to walk a mile to find our room in the pouring rain. We had only been in the room for about 3 minutes when huge cockroaches started crawling everywhere and we decided that there was
no way we could sleep there! Luckily the place had another room and this one was creature free. We settled down to try and get some sleep.
The next morning we woke to find that the floor was wet and that my bags were soaking wet! The weather here is not great at the moment as there is a typhoon sweeping across the country and it is causing wind and rain! The wind and rain had been too much for our room and it had leaked in several places! However we had no choice but to stay there for another night as the weather was too bad for ferries to run.
Finally when there was a break in the weather we got a jeepney to the next town. This was a great journey as all of the Filipinos wanted to take our photo and Dan managed to scare many children as they don't get to see that many white people! We found a room as we had to wait for another night before there was a boat going. This room was a breeding ground for mosquitos...so we had to kill about 30 before we could get any sleep.
The next morning we got our boat to Caticlan. This was a very interesting journey as the boat was very crowded with people, chickens, ducks, two pigs and about 800 hens eggs! Some people like to travel with their chicken on a lead and the chicken sits under their chair!!! Luckily we got there early as some people had to sit on the roof or at the back with the pigs. It was all good fun! After three hours we got to Caticlan and then we got onto our last boat which got us here to Boracay!
Here we have found a nice room with no bugs or leaks. Sadly we cant control the weather and it still isn't great! Yesterday we went for a swim in the sea...and it was very cold! I expect that we will stay here for a few days though as I can't face getting on a boat for a while! We now have just over three weeks left in the Philippines so we have to plan carefully. There are still a few more places and dive sites that we want to see and we don't want to spend the whole time on
ferries!
We have to be back in Manila on 4th of Feb for our flight to Palau. Its Dans birthday on the 3rd so I am booking us into a fancy hotel that has a bath! After nearly six months away the two things that I miss the most are having a bath and eating white hedgehog bread from Asda!!!! Sad I know!
Love to you all, hope that 2009 is treating you well!
Wendy
