We headed away from Friendly Beaches towards Port Arthur, stopping for some berry picking at Sorell Fruit Farm along the way. We decided we needed at least a couple of nights in a caravan park to clean up, so rang ahead to try and book somewhere. The caravan park in Port Arthur was full, but we managed to get into the caravan park at White Beach, about 10km from Port Arthur. The park was packed and teaming with kids and quite nice except it was the first time on this trip that we also had to pay extra for showers and to use the barbecues in a caravan park.

A very cold and brisk southwesterly wind as well as occasional showers made it a very cold stay at White Beach. We also didn't have an ideal day weather-wise on the Tuesday when we spent the day at Port Arthur Historic Site, but it was a very enjoyable day nonetheless. Wednesday (New Year's Eve) was also a bit cold and miserable, but we did the touristy thing at Pirates Bay lookout, Tessellated Pavement, Eaglehawk Neck Officers Quarters Museum built in 1832 and the Dog Line, Devils Kitchen and Tasman Arch, Tasman Blowhole (which wasn't blowing) and Remarkable Cave. The latter was aptly name considering the remarkable stench that was emanating from the rocks below due to a rotting sea-lion carcass! The highlight of the day was probably our drive into Fortescue Bay where we had lunch and then met a Discovery Ranger for a very interesting talk about Tasmanian Devils. There was only the four of us and one other lady at the talk, which was a shame, but it meant we pretty much had one on one with the Ranger.

New Year's Eve was very quiet and uneventful as we retired fairly early and the howling winds drowned out any noise of those who decided to stay up and see in the New Year.
