Once again, Christmas came around pretty quick so we decided to take off and see some of the bigger cities in Italy that would be tricky to visit in a camper. Brian (the big blue van) spent Christmas cold and alone back in West London. It was hard leaving him but it had to be done. Venice, with its complete lack of roads - isn’t the best place to take a camper!

Venice is one of those places that really does live up to the glowing descriptions in the travel books. It is gorgeous - the lack of cars really makes a difference to the atmosphere.

We spent four days wandering around the canals, squares and back streets.

It’s impossible to escape the tourists in Venice but we made a good shot of it - getting hopelessly lost in the graffiti covered backstreets, generally in an effort to find food that wasn’t overpriced, bland tourist crap. Sometimes we succeeded, other times we ate overpriced, bland tourist crap.

Wandering around the island, we discovered a few things about Venetians.
1. They dress very well.
2. They love small dogs.
3. They dress their small dogs well. In fact, the dogs were wearing much more stylish clothing than either of us.

After a great deal of going “ohmygodlookatthatcanal - isntitsopretty?!”, pizza, piazzas and people watching we pulled out little suitcases across the island to the train station and jumped aboard a train bound for Florence.
